POSTS STORIES REELS

Like many of you, I devoured Lessons in Chemistry and was incredibly excited to get my hands on Peck and Peck, the new book by @bonnie_gramus_author.

We all have passions, for our main character Batter Gray, that is poetry. Now, Batter doesn’t just like poetry, he is obsessed he has loved poetry his entire life. Through a series of events and persistence, he ends up working at his beloved poetry journal: Peck & Peck. The building is it’s own character, at times feeling like an architectural dream world, but ultimately inside is an all too real toxic work environment and the business fueled by generational family drama. Although this book is about and primarily set in the office of an elite poetry magazine, poetry is featured sparingly.

Once again, Garmus excels in writing interesting and unique characters with witty dialogue. The storyline waxed and waned a bit with occasional descriptive chapters that ultimately paid off with important plot information. I was invested in the characters and was constantly trying to figure out who to root for and more importantly, who not to. The Peck brothers Declonius and Salton were both over-the-top and seemingly unreliable characters. Batter’s mother Rainey is the standout character for me. From her stories of Batter’s namesake which seem too good to be true, to her brilliant finale in the book, she is often underestimated and for me, she is an amazing character to rally behind.

This book is perfect for those who like stories with family drama, stories of perseverance, passion for the written word, and a touch of mystery.

Thank you to @simonschusterca and @tandemcollectiveglobal for gifting me a copy of this book and for the opportunity to join a fantastic group of readers for this readalong.

If you have ever wanted to be a fly on the wall during some of the most challenging times in history, where ordinary people had to make extraordinary decisions to survive, The Barman Of The Ritz by Philippe Collin is for you. Our barman, Frank Meier, has made a career of serving some of Parisian history’s most iconic characters but when the Germans occupy Paris, Frank has to pivot from his beloved artists to serving the German soldiers who have taken up residence in the Ritz. What most people don’t know is that Frank is Jewish.

Readers get a first-hand look into Frank’s encounters with patrons at the bar, while also reading an honest version of events with glimpses into his personal life through diary entries. Frank helps countless people in this story, but by helping a woman he secretly loves, he puts himself at greatest risk of being discovered. Everyone at The Ritz is living in a bubble of excess at a time when the rest of Paris is struggling to survive. In this insular experience Frank finds himself in a position of privilege that comes at great personal cost. Knowing that one wrong move could mean death.

The characters in the book are based on real people and the appendix includes photos and reveals what happened to the characters after the story ends. This book is perfect for fans of: All the Light We Cannot See, The Nightingale, The Rose Code, and Sarah’s Key. Although it is set during World War Two, it does not include any scenes of active military combat but does include drug and alcohol use, and mentions of the ideologies and actions of the Nazi Party towards the Jewish citizens in France. This story was gripping, filled with fascinating characters and somehow makes what must have been an incredibly difficult time a hard book to put down. A definite recommendation!

It has been an absolute pleasure participating in this #TandemReadalong alongside other readers. What a great experience. Thank you to @simonschusterca for providing a copy of this book.

Day 3 of #TheBarmanOfTheRitzReadalong creative challenge is to create mocktail since Frank likes to create new cocktails. I decided to create one that represents Frank: The Hidden Meaning Mocktail (recipe below). This drink hides a secret with a clever disguise that no one can see unless they know the secret. It is also a nod to the peach drink Frank made for himself .

Hidden Meaning Mocktail
2 oz Seedlip Grove Non-alcoholic spirit
3 oz Peach Juice
1 oz lemon juice
3 oz Butterfly Pea Flower Tea (chilled)
Ice

1. Add ice to glass and Butterfly Pea Flower Tea
2. In another mixing glass mix first 3 ingredients together
3. Pour mixture slowly over tea
4. Stir as needed
5. Enjoy!
