“To me, my tools and equipment are functional forms of art” Thomas Carvolth

Through passion and obsession, I have curated a deeply personal and wonderfully unique collection of machinery and tools. Each carries its own history of use, place and connection to community. While collectively reflecting the locale in which I work.

These objects are more than functional instruments; they form an archive of my practice. Their wear, construction and continued presence speak to a relationship with making that is grounded in material investigation, craft and the archaeology of process. Together, they embody the values and ideology that underpin my work: to preserve, adapt and find new meaning in the tools and materials that shape how things are made.

At the core of my approach is an interest in permanence, utility, and cultural endurance. Creating objects and outcomes that hold relevance beyond immediacy, while maintaining a strong connection to craft, process, and the physical act of making.

I recently designed and modelled these roller dies, to be machined out of 304 Stainless Steel. This allows me to roll a speciality rectangular hollow section in house.

A very satisfying process and was lucky enough to see the machining happen in real time. The fitment is perfect.

It is imperative that the metal die matches the profile of the steel perfectly, this stops the shape of the steel from deforming whilst under load.

Seeing the machined dies on the @machineryhouseau Manual Ring Roller is a thing of beauty. This little unit packs a massive punch!

The Nom Nom Series explores the translation of industrial fabrication into contemporary craft.

Using a single, repeatable pipe form, each piece investigates how minor shifts in orientation can generate entirely new outcomes. The circle becomes a starting point-not as fixed geometry but as a system capable of producing rhythm, flow and variation through simple intervention.

These works draw on the inherent logic of industrial components, where efficiency and repetition are prioritised and reframe them within a more sensitive, interior context. The result is a tension between precision and intuition: objects that are engineered, yet feel organic in their movement.

The use of hot formed carbon steel retains a memory of process beneath the powdercoated surface. While machined brass fittings introduce a contrasting level of refinement and detail.

Candles extend the composition rather than simply occupying it. introducing light, warmth and temporality into otherwise permanent forms.

Ultimately, the series is an exploration into how industrial language can be softened, reoriented and reimagined. Transforming familiar materials into objects that feel both grounded and unexpectedly fluid.

The heart of the studio has finally got a long awaited revamp. A new rolling 4 post frame magnificently powder coated by @morestel_powder_coaters

A 90 degree apron for more fixturing capacity. Along with a precision adjustment across the length and width of the 16mm steel top.

Signed, sealed and delivered with a 1 of 1 in house designed, cast aluminium machinery plaque.

Big ups to @andrewcarvolth for assisting with the wrangling of the plate steel, that’s a heavy bit of gear!

This series of reels documents the whole process from go to whoa! Material break down, fabrication, CAD design, casting and assembly!

More Molten Metal

After getting a masterclass in pattern making, mould making and foundry 101 with @andrewcarvolth

We went to the foundry to see moulder and foundry-man Peter!

Completely blown away by the process. Watching the sand mould come together and lifting the pattern away to reveal the negative cavity was an incredibly satisfying moment. After drawing and modelling the original pattern, it was rewarding to see the process work exactly as intended.

Pouring the molten aluminium and watching it rise through the sprues, with the furnace roaring away in the background, made for one of those unforgettable workshop moments.

This custom cast machinery badge will be the finishing touch on a project currently taking shape in the studio.
