The decoding of visual inputs, much like the adaptation or further development of linguistic or gestural experiences, preserves (temporary) building blocks of oneโs own cultural expression and identity. As early as childhood and adolescence, an individualโs ability to recognise symbols and signs and to classify them associatively, in accordance with their subjective conditioning, begins to develop.
The process of relating oneโs own experiences to observations and the emotional responses arising from them is regarded as an active and social process of receptivity to visual codes. In this way, โmental images arise in the perceiving subject that resonate with experiences and memories, with images and episodes from their personal life-world.โ
Since his youth in the 2000s, the Marseille-based artist Tchader has applied precisely this critical and analytical reflection to signs, integrating into his compositions shapes of 8-bit computer graphics, brand logos, or symbols and designs from specific cultural spheres such as the techno or graffiti scenes. He extracts individual components from the respective visual languageโfragments that have personally moved or influenced him, or that have become characteristic of a particular scene or styleโand arranges them rhythmically on various surfaces to create wall, floor and canvas paintings or metallic assemblages. Tchader identifies distinct fields of force within symbols from early desktop interfaces, graffiti-inspired decorations or letter extensions, which he allows to radiate through collages or pictorial landscapes featuring vaporwave elements, garishly bended natural forms, retro-graphic structures, as well as distortions and morphings of signs and objects from his cultural identity and biography.
