‘For starters, I refuse to strike certain words from our vocabulary. Words like ‘love’, ‘being loved’, ‘inspiration’, ‘dreams’. These are subjects people rarely actually talk about. Instead, they default to manufactured, socially acceptable phrasing. But we aren’t an office. I give people the space to let their personalities unfold. I don’t break anyone, and I have no desire to rein anyone in. What I am after is not the polished facade of an orchestra, but the raw expression of every single musician, grounded in a spiritual respect for that person’s heart and soul.’

The Theatre of Epidaurus — one of the best-preserved ancient theatres in the world. Built in the 4th century BCE, it seats around 10,000 spectators.

The Utopia Orchestra is making final preparations to perform in this historic setting. This performance is part of the 70th anniversary of the Athens Epidaurus Festival @athensepidaurusfestival. In the programme: Mahler’s Symphony No. 4, Songs on the Death of Children.

In November, Teodor Currentzis @tcurrentzis and Utopia will embark on a two-continent tour, marking the orchestra’s first-ever concerts in Asia.

The programme brings together Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring and Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1 with Daniel Lozakovich @daniellozakovich. The Taipei concert and the second evening in Seoul feature Mahler's Symphony No. 1 and Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No. 2 with Alexander Melnikov.
