Symphony, a French song brought back to the States during the second world war, and given English lyrics, highly popular with GIs and people everywhere, this version sung by Jo Stafford with her husband Paul Weston's band providing backup, on Johnny Mercer's Capitol Records label, played here on a 1942 Philco 42-1012 radio with Beam of Light record changer and reproducer, originally sold here in Milwaukee at Schuster's Department Store.
I've posted a video of the first record elsewhere in my profile. "Must be Jelly 'Cause Jam Don't Shake Like That" Glenn Miller and his Orchestra

Originally released by Paramount in theatres, and later re-released on television in the 1950s by NTA, who bought up many Paramount short subjects. Sound distortion and picture sway come from the original print. The uneven speed is because I was using a lamp-grade extension cord. I've since made a heavy duty power cord with 14 gauge wire. The motor governor can't maintain speed if there isn't enough reserve voltage, and the entire projector draws 950 watts.

Artie Shaw and his band demonstrate their version of swing, with semi-corny narration added in. Helen Forrest sings the vocals. A very young 22 year old Buddy Rich adds some great dynamics to the band with his unique drumming. Helen Forrest is also about 22 here. She got her start as a soon to be very famous and well known band singer right at this point. After singing for Shaw, Goodman, and James, she became known as "The voice of the name bands." Wish I knew what wise-ass remarks the pianist, Bob Kitsis, was making. They dubbed in the sound later, so he can't be heard. Even he is about 22 here. Very young band. He was originally going to school for medicine, but also joined various bands to pursue his interest in music, and happened to land a job with Shaw's band, one of the most famous in the country. Incidentally, Al Avola's guitar sold for $15,000 a few years back.

"Nightmare" by Artie Shaw; "I have eyes" by Leo Robin, Ralph Rainger, sung by Helen Forrest; "Shoot the likker to me, John boy". (Songs)-  Artie Shaw and his Orchestra: John Best, Bernie Privin, Chuck Peterson, trumpet; George Arus, Les Jenkins, Harry Rodgers, trombone; Artie Shaw, clarinet; Les Robinson, Hank Freeman, alto sax; Tony Pastor, Georgie Auld, tenor sax; Bob Kitsis, piano; Al Avola, guitar; Sid Weiss, bass; Buddy Rich, drums.

Just tryin out goofy selfies on this new phone, thinkin that maybe I should put sheets on this bed... lol
Side note... I guess that Gen Z is requesting that millennials stop putting "lol" at the end of their comments, but since I'm Gen X, I s'pose that I get to ignore that request. lol 🤣🤣 by @td231x

My 1934 Philco 118H came a long way. I'm done with the cabinet for now, but might add more clear in the future to address a couple of sags in the upper trim, and to get the finish smother in general so that it lacks grain texture. I'm always learning, and I've learned some lessons here, but I think that it turned out pretty darn nice at any rate. Between the humidity, which ruins a lacquer job, and the brain cells I potentially kill from the fumes, I considered paying a professional $600-$800, but they all wanted $3,000. lol Nope... I'll kill my own brain cells for far less. ...And it turned out amazing anyway. Still some electrical work to do. The radio works very well, but the original capacitors should be replaced. I replaced some critical ones already. I also want to give the cabinet a bottom to improve bass from the speaker from a distance. They left it wide open, which reduces bass if you're not sitting right next to it. Might give it an aux jack for Bluetooth, too. Not sure. I need to build a small transmitter and put Bluetooth on that instead. Then, I can hit all of my radios at once. I was thinking about using a 12SC7, which is a dual triode with a common cathode, as both a cathode - driven oscillator and an audio pre-amp. Since the cathode would have the carrier on it, it would modulate the audio accordingly. Output would be from a 70L7, which is a combination power pentode and power rectifier. #antiqueradio #tubeamplifier #tuberadio #philcoradio #consoleradio by @td231x

The Pixel 11 XL Pro seems to take nice selfies (no lens distortion), moon pics, and other telephoto pics. The radio dial I took from across the room. I'm still kinda stuck on my S23 Ultra even though I hate it. I need to start taking this phone with me to see how the camera and signal do elsewhere. by @td231x

...My S23 Ultra, which had one of the best cameras in the cell industry at the time, struggling with telephoto pics... The second pic was "cleaned up" with their automatic AI processing or whatever. Just got my new Pixel 11 Pro XL in the mail, and I'm at least satisfied with its telephoto pics of objects across the room, so we shall see. I'm going to wait until the weekend to set it up. by @td231x

Just bought this Philco 118. Felt sorry for it on Marketplace because the price dropped from $100 to 50, and worried that it'd wind up in the trash. It's very beautiful and all is original. The guy said that it works. I couldn't believe it, but it does! I will still go over it, and maybe tweak the audio interstage resistors because, in spite of the large speaker, it has no bass. I'm already consulting for refinishing. In the past, I'd try to refinish this myself, but I don't care to at this point. by @td231x

Although I find this song overused (probably a third of WWII or 40s themed anything that isn't otherwise using In the Mood or Sing Sing Sing as a musical background), it is a beautiful piece. I first heard it long ago on a small town radio station up in the northwoods of Wisconsin, and fell in love. The band made over 266 commercial recordings in their short 4 year run of top popularity, ranging from beautiful romantic ballads to hot swing, and goofy fun novelty tunes. They charted 69 top 10 hits, which is more than any other band in the history of recorded music, as much as Drake and The Beatles combined. The only artist to have more top 10 hits is Bing Crosby. He also holds the record for #1 hits.

Glenn Miller wrote this song a number of years before, but was encouraged to record it under its current title. The cut was made in April of 1939, and would go on to reach #3 position, which it would hold for 15 weeks. The song ranked generally as one of the top songs of 1939. It would also go on to be the band's theme, and opened a majority of their radio broadcasts.

In the Mood, also a GM recording and arrangement (modified from Joe Garland's original arrangement), was also a top tune for 1939. I believe that the GM band had over 15 songs that charted high that year. Of all of the GM records I've heard, very few are actually mediocre. Even most of the tunes that didn't chart so high are pretty good. I have heard some broadcasts where the band and singers sound sloppy, out of tune, perhaps exhausted from road trips. In others, they sound amazing. by @td231x

Needed a little camping get-away. Moon is deep orange, but the wildfire smoke isn't bad up here in Boulder Junction. The EAA Osh26 was packed. Got a better view of the planes from Instagram. Definitely the world's busiest airport!
All of the outside pics were taken in light way lower than what it seems. I think that each had a shutter speed of 2 seconds, and I was just holding my phone. by @td231x

My latest restore... A 1930s Robbins and Myers "double diamond" fan... I watched "The Letter" starring Bette Davis, and the film had this style of fan in many different scenes, which caught my eye. This fan seems to have come out sometime in the mid-30s, and follows the "quiet blade" trend, and this blade, with its rounded overlapping blades, is really quiet, and blows a lot of air without noise. The motor is also a very efficient capacitor start/run motor, drawing only 42 watts! Similar size fans with shaded pole motors draw almost 90 watts!

I had the cage chromed after I fixed some broken welds, and that's probably the nicest part. My paint job, a second or third attempt, has runs, ripples, and other flaws. I started with just gloss black, but its drying time coupled with that I'd eventually need a clear for the bare aluminum parts anyway, made me think to use flat black, which dries faster, followed by a clear coat. The clear I used is very prone to orange peel. After multiple sand-downs and coats, and some runs and other flaws, I decided to just leave it as-is for now. It looks good from 10 feet away. lol

The silver stripes were originally painted. I was going to have the metal chrome plated, but then found that it was aluminum, so I polished up the striping.

The blades were originally all black, but I'm thinking about stripping them and polishing the hub. The assembly is aluminum, so it could look nice, a shiny silver hub with black blades. by @td231x
