T. Eric Monroe helped preserve some of Hip Hop’s most important years through photography. While the culture was rapidly growing through the 90s, Monroe was documenting artists like Nas, Tupac, Biggie, Wu-Tang Clan, Lauryn Hill and Big Pun in ways that felt honest and unfiltered.

His photographs captured artists before image consultants, social media and branding fully shaped how artists presented themselves publicly. More than 30 years later, his archive still stands as one of the most authentic visual time capsules Hip Hop has.

✨The day I met @tdoteric I made a friend and mentor forever. I am always grateful to have been introduced to fellow artists as my artist name by Eric and it deconstructed my imposter syndrome overtime. Not only is he an amazing photographer but he has all these amazing stories about all of his photos and it allows you to thoroughly feel the emotions of it all whether it’s light hearted or tense. These stories in his book and even those I heard in real life, personified those invoking stills even further. His empathy and skill to organically connect with humans is seen through the comfort and vulnerability of the now legends he shot. At the time, he was living in the moment and excited for the thrill and documenting it all to later realize he was creating an archival of legacies including his own. One of the books he signed for me says “Keep Imagining - What If?” Eric reminds me to be present and receptive to what today brings, knowing one day it’ll be a beautiful memory to look back on.
