This year has seen the highest number of film releases in Anne Hathaway‘s (@annehathaway) career. Over the course of just six months, audiences have seen-and will continue to see-her portray a pop superstar struggling to reclaim the heights of her fame, an editor returning to a fashion magazine, a queen from Greek mythology, a suburban mother pushed to the brink of collapse, and a complex antagonist in a psychological thriller. This concentrated wave of releases has also brought with it an extensive international publicity tour: premieres across multiple countries, several meticulously styled red-carpet appearances, and countless interviews and photo shoots. Yet when Anne Hathaway appears on screen to speak with us, there is almost no trace of the whirlwind of work she has been through. Even amid such busy schedule, she also announced the joyful news that she is expecting her third child. She looks calm and happy. ”For a very long time, acting was the greatest love of my life, and it was at the core of my sense of identity. Now, I also have an identity outside of acting.“ She still loves acting wholeheartedly, but it no longer bears the burden of defining her life. ”If acting were taken away from me one day, I would be heartbroken, but I would absolutely find other ways to express myself. It wouldn’t be devastating. If something disappeared from my real life-from the life I actually live-that would be catastrophic, that would be devastating. Films are still the most important thing in the world to me,“ she says, before gently correcting herself. ”But they‘re no longer the only thing that matters most in my world.“ More than twenty-five years into her career, she no longer seems interested in proving anyone wrong or persuading anyone of her worth. ”I no longer crave attention for my career,“ she admits. ”The only reason I keep making films is that I truly love it.“ 📸 @voguechina #AnneHathaway #VogueChina #VOGUE #TheOdyssey #TheEndofOakStreet by @tdwp2
Entering her forties has given #AnneHathaway (@annehathaway) a more profound understanding of what it means to be a woman. “All of a sudden, I looked around and realized that I have this extraordinary freedom to run forward as fast as I want, without being held back-not because I’m a well-known actress, but simply because I’m alive.” She believes that, for the first time in history, countless women are able to write their own lives after forty, rather than inherit the expectations laid down by generations before them. “The world can’t really tell me what a woman in her forties is supposed to be. It’s up to us to define what that looks like-not to wait for someone else to sell us a template.” For Hathaway, portraying Penelope also became an opportunity to reconsider whom history chooses to celebrate. Odysseus is remembered for his adventures; Penelope’s work, by contrast, is largely invisible. “I think she managed to maintain an impossible situation. She kept everything from falling apart, from descending into violence. People don’t celebrate that kind of greatness because it isn’t exciting. It isn’t a glorious adventure. There isn’t bloodshed or war. But it’s every bit as noble.” The observation naturally extends to the present day. If The Odyssey helps us understand an past era, what does she hope people in the future will say when they look back on this moment in history-especially about the women of our time? She does not hesitate. “I hope they’ll say that we stood shoulder to shoulder and refused to give up even a single step. I hope they’ll say that as long as not everyone moved forward together, it wasn’t real progress. And I hope they’ll say that this was the moment when things truly began to change.” 📸 @voguechina #VogueChina #VOGUE #TheOdyssey #TheEndofOakStreet by @tdwp2
