Rukuhia te whare whakairo o Tangaroa, rukuhia te mātauranga whakairo o Ruatepupuke, rukuhia ngā kōrero tuku iho, ngā pae auaha hou mō te toi whakairo me te mana tangata. He kura huna o Ruatepupuke ki te ao tāngata - He Toi Whakairo!

This weekend we are excited to open a new major exhibition, "He Toi Whakairo: The Art of Māori Carving," with over 140 taonga spanning seven centuries of carving.

Whakairo is a living artform. The exhibition follows that story from historic taonga tuku iho as early as the 1300s, through 1800s–1900s master carvers like Tene Waitere, to today's leading carvers, Dr Lyonel Grant, Clive Fugill, Stacey Gordine, Rangi Kipa, Stevei Houkāmau, Ngaroma Riley, Sam Hauwaho, Fayne Robinson, Matthew Randall, and Riki Manuel. Our exhibition design and colour move through that same journey of tradition and innovation side by side.

Head to our website to learn more via link in bio, and join us for our opening weekend event.

"Bottles are receptacles for many things, healing herbs and medicines, darkroom chemicals, perfumes, nourishing creams, foods and wine. To me they speak of memories and are perhaps allegories for life."-Annemarie Hope-Cross (1968-2022)

These ghostly images are made with an early photographic process called ‘photogenic drawing’. Paper brushed with salt is exposed to sunlight, capturing a fragile impression of an object.
Using a simple wooden ‘box’ camera, Annemarie Hope-Cross exposed each image for up to eight hours in the clear Central Otago light. The series meditates on forms of inheritance – from bottles that stored her photographer grandfather’s emulsions, to perfumes gifted to her mother by her father.

Currently on display in Slow Burn: Women and Photography | Ahi Tāmau: Māreikura Whakaahua, level 4, Toi Art galleries until February 2027
