Diary of a Void by Emi Yagi

I stumbled into this book very unexpectedly. I saw the cover of the book and just decided to read it.

There is something about this book that silently shifted things within me. I sat thinking for hours after finishing the book, thinking about the thoughts running through the mind of Shibata, who had to pretend that she was pregnant to escape the pressing misogyny at work. Shibata, who was looked down on by her male colleagues and was expected to do all the menial tasks in the office including cleaning the meeting rooms, getting the coffee, cleaning every staff member’s coffee cups, emptying the bin etc was just unacceptable. But suddenly when she tells them she is pregnant, she is relieved of these duties. She was being considered just because another human was growing inside her.

This makes you question whether the only chance for women to get noticed and approached with consideration was only when she was pregnant!!!!! Why did it take a pregnancy for people to finally respect her time, her body and her boundaries?

The fake pregnancy was initially an escape for Shibata but it slowly turned into her reality. It turns into the readers reality. The more she lives this lie, the more it changes her. She starts seeing herself differently and the pregnancy becomes almost like an identity she has created for herself. What began as a way to escape the expectations placed on her at work slowly becomes something much bigger.

And I think this is what stayed with me the most. The book made me think about how women are expected to be useful, accommodating and available, and how easily their own needs can be ignored. Shibata only had to say she was pregnant for everyone to suddenly treat her differently.

There was something so quietly unsettling about this book. Nothing felt overly dramatic, but the thoughts it left me with were anything but quiet. I finished it and just kept thinking about Shibata, her choices and the strange reality that she lived in.

A very unexpected read, but one that stayed with me long after I finished it.

Zikora by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

What stayed with me most after reading this book was the relationship between Zikora and her mother. Zikora is successful and believes she has built the perfect life for herself, until she gets pregnant and her boyfriend walks away, leaving everything she thought she had suddenly feeling like it was falling apart.

And then there is her mother, the one constant person who has been there all along.

What makes their relationship so heartbreaking is that Zikora spends much of her life resenting her mother. She questions her lack of outward affection and struggles to understand why her mother doesn’t express love in the way she wants or expects. At the same time, she is desperate for her father’s approval and keeps choosing his side, even though he is the one who has remarried and broke the family because her mother could not give him sons.

There is something so painful about watching Zikora slowly come to understand what she couldn’t see when she was younger: her mother was there. Quietly, consistently, imperfectly, but there.

I loved that the story doesn’t present motherhood as some perfect, endlessly nurturing thing. It allows us to see how complicated love can be how two people can love each other deeply and still spend years misunderstanding one another. Sometimes love isn’t expressed in grand gestures or the words we desperately want to hear. Sometimes it is simply someone staying.

And perhaps the most moving part was watching Zikora realise, when her own life began to unravel, that the mother she had spent so much of her life questioning was the person she could ultimately count on.

A quiet, emotionally layered short story about motherhood, resentment, forgiveness, family, and the complicated way we learn to recognise love.
