My name is Thi Bui. I’m a nonfiction writer who also draws. In January I started a Substack called Before You Die, Dammit so I can share 1-3 shorter pieces a week with you as I do news summaries, original reporting, and political analysis in my own special combo of smart, sad, and mad. Finding Papa Okay, this is definitely my kind of picture book again. 🥹 Finding Papa tells the story of Mai and her family, who were separated during their journey out of Vietnam and the long journey that eventually brings them back together. I honestly feel like I need to read more books like this. I don’t come across many children’s books that talk about families leaving their home country, especially stories inspired by real experiences like this one. So when I found Finding Papa, it immediately felt a little different from the usual picture books we read. What I love most is how the story manages to explain something so difficult through a child’s eyes. The journey is heartbreaking, but the book never feels too complicated for a child to understand. And the little “chomp chomp” game between Papa and Mai… 🥹 It sounds like such a small thing, but seeing Mai hold on to that memory during her journey really got me. It becomes her little connection to Papa and something that makes her feel close to him even when they’re apart. I also really loved Mai’s mother. The strength and determination she shows throughout everything they go through are incredible. The illustrations are beautiful too. Very expressive and emotional without needing too many words. A really beautiful story about family, separation, courage and hope. Me: How many marathons have you run? Ny: Since I’ve been home? I stopped counting after five lol. Not more than 10 though. They were mostly half marathons – 13 miles – and 5Ks. Only two full marathons – 26.1 miles. Me: !! Ny: Lol had major foot surgery two years ago too. I’m running three to five miles for now but hope to start doing marathons again early next year.
