Last week, @oaklandu welcomed representatives from teacher preparation programs across Michigan for the latest Deans and Representatives of Teacher Education Programs (DARTEP) Conference. 🤝

DARTEP brings together leaders from the Michigan Department of Education and university-based teacher preparation programs across the state to connect, collaborate and discuss the future of teacher education in Michigan. 💡 The day included remarks from SEHS Dean Jon Margerum-Leys and Associate Dean Darlene Groomes, along with opportunities for attendees to learn more about teacher preparation at Oakland University. Guests also had the option to tour our Educational Resources Lab and Lowry Center for Early Childhood Education. 📚

Thank you Trina Hunt, for being a mentor! 👩‍🏫

Breanna Majer had her student teaching placement at Great Oaks Elementary School in kindergarten with her mentor teacher, Trina Hunt. Breanna is studying for an undergraduate Elementary Education degree. In her future classroom, she plans to use her mentor’s classroom management strategies and behavior management.

“She made my morning everyday when I walked in the classroom,” Breanna said of her time working with Trina. “I have learned so much. I went in knowing nothing and came out feeling ready to be in my own classroom.”

Thank you, Dena Mell-Dorchy and Melanie Corcoran, for being mentors! 🎨👩‍🏫

Amanda Trotto had her student teaching placement at L’Anse Cruese High School North in high school art with her mentor teachers, Dena Mell-Dorchy and Melanie Corcoran. Amanda is studying for an undergraduate K–12 Art Education degree. In her future classroom, she plans to use what she learned from her mentors to encourage creativity among her students.

“My mentors taught me so much about teaching to the current attention spans of students, breaking down projects into manageable parts and about encouraging students to think outside the box,” Amanda said. “I plan to use these techniques when designing lesson plans for my students allowing for flexibility, choice and creativity to flow!”

Amanda says her mentor teachers were very encouraging and consistently provided helpful feedback to help her present clearer direction in the future.🤗

“Personally, my mentor teachers helped me define what a successful lesson is and how to set realistic goals for myself as an educator,” she said. “[They] were always available to talk through a challenge or offer a ‘what if’ scenario, [and] they often generously shared their own experiences from the classroom for me to learn from.”

One of Amanda’s favorite memories working with her mentor teachers was when they sent her a coffee gram that said, “We are so grateful you made your way to us. You are awesome!” Amanda says she keeps it taped in her day planner as a reminder of how welcome and appreciated she always felt working with them.☕

Thank you Lucinda Salmon, for being a mentor!📝👩‍🏫

Grace Elliot had her student teaching placement at Long Meadow Elementary School in fourth grade with her mentor teacher, Lucinda Salmon. Grace is studying for an undergraduate Elementary Education degree. She has learned various lessons from Lucinda that she plans to take into her future classroom, prioritizing patience, compassion and relationship-building with students.

“Lucinda taught me to always teach with your heart,” Grace said, “because when you lead with kindness, empathy and belief in your students, you create a space where they can truly grow. I will carry that with me into my own classroom.”

Grace says she cherished her time bonding with Lucinda both in and out of the classroom, even on their days off. “Lucinda is a very warm and giving person,” Grace said. “A few days a week, she would bring me in lunch. We are both big foodies and even went grocery shopping a few times together on half days or days we didn’t have school. The fact that she thought of me when packing her lunch the night before just goes to show how thoughtful she is.”

Grace credits Lucinda with helping her grow as an educator. 🌱

“[Lucinda] strengthened my confidence in lesson planning and classroom management, and pushed me to be more intentional and reflective,” Grace said. “Because of her, I feel more prepared for my own classroom.”

The future of education starts with you!🍎🖍️
On Tuesday, 14 Teacher Cadet programs of districts represented across Shiawassee, Genessee, Livingston, Oakland, and Macomb counties attended the Future Teachers Conference at @oaklandu.

The event included multiple presentations featuring our different programs, a keynote speech from the Regional Teacher of the Year Stephanie Jaskolski, a tour of campus and the opportunity to hear from a student panel.
