As a casual teacher, I get to hop between different grades, and lately I’ve noticed a gap in students’ understanding of sentence structure. When I ask for a compound sentence, I’m often given a simple sentence instead.

It’s reminded me how important it is to slow down and explicitly teach how sentences are built—not just ask students to “add more detail”.

That’s why I created my Compound & Complex Sentences Resource Pack! With two colourful posters and step-by-step activities, it helps students recognise, build and practise different sentence structures before using them in their own writing.

A little support with sentence building can go a long way towards helping students feel more confident as writers.

One of my favourite things about looking through their books is seeing the progress they might not notice yet. The sentence they couldn’t write before. The question they finally attempted. The little “I’ll try” after weeks of “I can’t”.

Those little steps deserve to be noticed. 🤍
