😩 Low back pain in the side torso exercises commonly stem from: 1. The head and chest leaning forward of the hips causing the torso to lose vertical alignment with the rest of the body. (Forward head posture and/or rib flare can both contribute to this) 2. The low belly spilling forward, rocking the pelvis into an anterior tilt, causing the low back muscles to shorten and tighten. Both of these body positions put excessive work in the low back, while allowing the rest of the core to not work as hard. An easy way to spot these is to stand at the client’s feet and look up the line of their body to see if their heel, knee, hip, shoulder and ear are all in a vertical line with each other. Solutions: 1. Stand behind your client and ask them to lean back into your waiting hand, as if they were putting their entire back body against a wall 2. Have them pull the low abdomen up the front side of their torso, while shooting their tailbone down towards their outstretched heel These 2 fixes bring the spine and pelvis into neutral alignment. Not only will this bring relief to the overworked low back muscles, it will also ask for more connected engagement from the entire core system. #lagreeinstructor #lagreefitness #sidetorso #lowbackpain by @teachlagree

How changing where the hands are changes intensity Take an S Crunch for example: changing the position of the arms can make the demand on the core higher or lower without changing the spring resistance. UPPER BODY ASSIST 1- hands anchored on the carriage offering an assist to the lift and lower 2- fingertips behind the knees offering an assist to the lift and lower *these two options are great for people who don’t have the strength yet to support the lift and lower of their trunk without compromising form. The arms can offer a push or pull to decrease the demand on the core muscles. PROXIMAL (CLOSE) HAND PLACEMENT 3- prayer hands or mummy arms in front of chest *keeping the hands and arms close to the body and the pivot joint (the hips) keeps the leverage demand relatively low DISTAL (FAR) HAND PLACEMENT 4- arms extended out in front of chest (arm weight still relatively close to hips) 5- hands behind the head (lengthening the lever and pulls arm weight away from hips) 6- arms stretched back overhead (creating the longest lever and biggest demand) *when the mass of the arms moves away from the hips, the lever is lengthened and the torque acting on the trunk is increased Having a toolkit of progressions and regressions is so helpful in giving your clients what they need. Clients often report that during an upright lunge, the sensation in the front of the back leg is more intense than the sensation on the back of the front leg. There are a number of reasons for this: -We spend a lot of time in hip flexion. -The upright silver angle lunge asks the back leg for a lot of hip extension. -the muscles on the front of the hip are smaller than the big power muscles on the back of the legs. They fatigue out faster -people might be putting too much weight on the carriage leg The thing is, these lunges are supposed to be full body! Both legs are working! But we don’t want clients to feel so much discomfort in the hip flexors that they have to stop. We want them to get all the juicy benefits of muscular endurance training.
