One of my favorite parts of teaching didn’t happen in my classroom.

A student would finish a prototype in my middle school design class, then take it home to show their family, or share it with friends after school so they could click through it themselves. Something they made, working in someone else’s hands.

That’s why I’m so excited to announce that Figma for Education is launching Monthly Student Design Challenges for middle and high school students! Every kiddo deserves the chance to make something real and learn skills that will serve them, whatever field they end up in.

#ad It’s not always easy to get students critiquing one another, as I’m sure you know lol. How do we help students move beyond “I like it” when talking about art? 🖼️💬 I’m using a FigJam to create a salon-style gallery of student artwork and have two crit formats you could try!

✨ 3 Glows & a Grow: Three specific positive comments and one supportive suggestion or question to help the artist develop their work.

🔴🔵 Warm & Cool Comments: Red sticky notes highlight what’s working, while blue sticky notes offer constructive suggestions or questions.

With either format, the expectation stays the same: feedback should be specific, helpful, and kind. The shared gallery gives students a place to look closely, celebrate each other’s choices, and practice putting their observations into words.

#ad Collage is the best but it requires a lot of understanding to be done at a high level - and we want that for our students! Before we break out the scissors and glue, consider making digital collage creatures on this FigJam 💻👾✂️

In this activity, students use FigJam to combine images of everyday objects into imaginative creatures while experimenting with scale, layering, and composition. They can move, rotate, resize, and rearrange pieces as they explore different possibilities, just as they would in a physical collage but with more immediate feedback to drive learning.
