TEAMBGV presents Shed Sessions: Episode One.

Shed Sessions is where professional background vocalists come together to hold ourselves—and each other—accountable in our craft. It’s not about rehearsing for a specific gig. It’s about staying sharp, conditioned, and ready.

This is a space for singers to shed together: blending, experimenting with harmonies, refining tone, and strengthening instincts, while staying true to the original arrangement. Because that’s the real work of a professional BGV—being creative and intuitive, while honoring the foundation of the song.

For Episode One, we’re shedding to Yebba’s Tiny Desk Concert. Background vocalists love this performance for the blend, the tone of the singers, and the subtle nuances throughout that make it such a joy to study and sing.

With our take on this piece, we stayed close to the original while adding a few creative touches of our own. More than anything, this was professionals coming together to sharpen one another.

Iron sharpens iron. Stay ready so you never have to get ready.

I don’t really talk about myself as a contractor because, honestly, I just enjoy putting amazing people together for one purpose: to do an amazing job. But I’m going to toot my own horn just a little because I did my thing this weekend. 😂

I had the honor of contracting BGVs for a 27th wedding anniversary celebration as well as a home rebuild celebration for a family whose home was lost in the LA fires. I was hired to contract for three different artists, three different sets, including one in a different language.

When I’m contracting, I’m not just asking, “Can they sing?” I’m looking at the whole picture. Do their tones work together for the right blend? Will they come prepared, know the music, and be able to adapt to whatever the job requires? Will they show up on time, professional, with the right energy and attitude? And yes, will they look the part? Style, aesthetic, stage presence, showmanship, even facial expressions all matter.

I hired two incredibly skilled BGVs, @jasmynehinson and @britani_ninice and these these ladies checked every box🔥 We looked good, we sounded good, we were prepared, professional, adaptable, and we genuinely had a great time working together. Most importantly, we delivered exactly what we were called to do, and the hosts gave us nothing but rave reviews all night.

That’s what good contracting means to me. It’s not just putting great voices together. It’s understanding how the voices, personalities, professionalism, preparation, energy, attitude, aesthetics, and performance come together to create the right team for the job.

Knowledge. Skill. Preparation. Professionalism. Energy. Attitude. Style. Aesthetic. Stage presence. Showmanship. All of it matters.

Thank you @cocoasarai for recommending my services and always speaking so highly of the quality that we at @teambgv provide. It means ALOT🙏🏽🫶🏾💯

Last night for our m PRO BGV SHED SESSION, we had an all-girls sexy R&B session focusing on blending and movement…I cannot WAIT to show you guys the final results🤗

But until then, I’m going to show you the process.

In the first two clips, we were finding places to breathe. The phrasing was pretty long, so we had to figure out where we wanted to collectively take our breaths so that, when we sang it, it could sound like ONE voice.

Then in the next clip, we’re finding our blend.

And this is the part I really want you guys to understand: the goal isn’t to show you perfection right out the gate.

We don’t start out perfect.

As professional BGVs, sometimes we have to be vulnerable enough to show the PROCESS. Because we don’t just walk into a room, sing together, and magically blend perfectly. There are things we have to figure out, find, adjust, and piece together along the way.

That’s the work.

So welcome to the process🎤

We had to take on “Happily Ever After” by Case, and whew… this one REALLY gave us a challenge!

We originally chose this song thinking the ’90s harmonies would be simple. We were WRONG. 😂 The parts were way more complex than we expected, and we had to really lock in to get them.

But we feel like we did a great job!

So now we want to know from YOU:

Did we land the parts? Do you hear any missing notes? Any wrong parts? Let us know in the comments!

We’re professional BGVs here in Los Angeles, meeting every Thursday to share, sing, learn, and stay conditioned together so we can always be ready for whatever comes our way.

This challenge was a GOOD one.

Shout out to @nina_marie_vocals (Rhonda Blackwell), the original singer on the hook and bridge🔥💪🏾🎤

Welcome to another PRO BGV SHED SESSION🎤🔥

In this clip, had no song chosen for us to shed to. Amanda suggested we learn “Happily Ever After” by @iamstillcase.

We went into it thinking, “Oh, this should be easy. It’s from the ’90s. Harmonies weren’t THAT complex back then…” 😂 We all knew the melody and the lead but had never dug into the BGVs…

LITTLE DID WE KNOW this ended up being one of our most challenging songs to learn parts to! So challenging that we had to stop and look up who vocally arranged the song… and that’s when we discovered it was @deepchrish. 😂

Well… THAT explained everything!

Thank you, Christopher Henderson, for giving us a REAL challenge. This one was fun.

I’ll be posting the results soon. 👀 STAY TUNED!
