Over the years, as we’ve hosted Black Men in White Coats Youth Summits across the country, we’ve had the privilege of meeting incredible kids and families from all backgrounds. Many of those students are now entering medical school, finally earning their own white coats.

According to a UCLA study, the percentage of Black male doctors has remained stagnant at just 2% since the 1940s. At the same time, Black men continue to have the lowest life expectancy in most cities across the U.S.

Study after study confirms what we already know: health outcomes in marginalized communities improve when patients are cared for by providers who look like them and when there are simply more doctors who share their cultural background and lived experience.

If we’re truly serious about fixing this, about saving lives and reducing the crushing economic burden of health disparities, then programs like ours wouldn’t be getting canceled in 2025.

This isn’t just about medicine.
It’s about equity.
It’s about justice.
It’s about the future.
Our Black boys need to see us to be us.

Let’s talk about it 🗣

Division 1 athletics is a full-time job. A pre-med course load combined with the rigor of intense athletic demands builds the critical resilience for a career in medicine.

As a physician, you will be expected to engage with copious amounts of information in a team and come up with a treatment plan. As an athlete, this is clockwork: you learn to adapt to different personalities, perspectives, roles, and constraints as you tackle the toughest days with your teammates. Even more, you learn to manage your time and commitments to maximize output!

This is your encouragement to keep going in your sport: it will lay a foundation of mature discipline that will allow you to adapt to the ebbs and flows of the rigorous medical training and beyond. 🥼

I grew up in Englewood, Chicago.
Not many people who look like me end up where I am today. I don’t say that for applause. I say it because representation matters.

Growing up on the Southside, I learned early that healthcare wasn’t always trusted. People avoided the doctor out of fear.

Fear of bad news.
Fear of surgery.
Fear of medications they didn’t understand.
Fear of a system that often felt distant from their reality.
That fear was real.

And it cost people.

| left home to learn. Howard University. Medical school.
Residency. Fellowship. I worked with athletes at the highest levels and stood on NFL sidelines as a team physician.

Then I came back.

Because quality healthcare shouldn’t depend on your zip code.
Sports medicine and primary care shouldn’t only be available to people with the right connections, the right insurance, or the right address.

If you’ve ever felt like medicine wasn’t built for you, that’s exactly why I’m here.

Southside raised. Southside serving.

Information shouldn’t have a copay.
