Champagne Part 3: Avenay-Val-d’Or/Verzy/Reims… and Blois!

We left Aÿ and took a beautiful drive to the east to Avenay-Val-d’Or…

First stop was @champagne_augustin to visit another organic, biodynamic grower/producer. I knew right away that this family was good people when I was greeted by a 6 month old vizsla puppy named ā€œBacchusā€ šŸ˜†

We loved learning more about their process and methods, including some aging in these terracotta amphoras…

The Augustin family wines we tasted were all so elegant and refined, even at zero dosage. The care and attention they are giving to their vines manages to shine through in each cuvée. Again, we loved their brut pinot noir, called ā€œFeuā€ (there were cuvées named after all of the elements, fire, water, earth, air…) and even bought a special Sapphire cuvée to save for my birthday next September šŸ™‚ it’s absolutely worth visiting Emmanuelle and her family if you’re in the area.

We decided our livers needed a break, so we grabbed a quick boulangerie lunch and then headed for a walk in the Faux de Verzy to see the strange dwarf beech trees. (Just go ahead and google it, they are super cool!)

We made the afternoon of exploring Reims, including a visit to the famous cathedral, where nearly all of the French kings were coronated.

Highlights included the cathedral (obvi), Korean barbecue at @hanuri_reims, and a last glass of @champagne_coessens ā€œPinotmaniacā€ (what can I say? I have a type!) at @lavertu.reims šŸ¾

And finally, on our way home, we stopped for a quick lunch in Blois in the Loire Valley, and poked around the castle!

I’m so incredibly grateful and lucky to have been able to visit such beautiful places over the past few days. Countryside and vineyards and castles and cathedrals… we really did it all! Learning about champagne making and tasting these wines made with so much TLC was such a dream come true.

Champagne Part 1: CoĢ‚te des Bars & Aÿ

For my birthday this year, my dear husband surprised me with the trip of my dreams to Champagne. For over a decade, I have dreamed of making a pilgrimage to this eastern region. So we set off last Thursday, and spent just over three days discovering and learning and tasting…

Our first stop was @arnaud_champagne_gallimard in Les Riceys/CoĢ‚te des Bars on the Burgundy border. I absolutely love Pinot noir-forward and blanc de noirs champagnes and this tiny producer did not disappoint. We discovered this grower/producer via @lastbottlewines when we lived in the US and we drank their entry-level reserve blanc de noirs. The growers welcomed us on a tour and then we were able to taste their full range of champagnes, coming home with some vintage 2018, their slightly more sophisticated, extra brut blanc de noirs (Le Meurgers), and their saignée rosé…

After checking into our little BnB, the Clos de Aÿ (which was adorable, had a very comfy bed, great hosts, and fab breakfast… but which I forgot to photograph), we headed to Épernay for dinner at @latablekobusofficiel for a solid meal and an excellent dessert. We then took an after-dinner stroll up the Avenue de Champagne and wandered into @bar_brut to taste two most organic growers champagnes. Naturally, we couldn’t resist picking up a few more bottles šŸ˜†

In the words of Snoop šŸŽ¶ I got a Rollie on my wrist and I’m pouring Chandon…

It was too late to pop in, but the Château Perrier champagne museum was still impressive from the outside!

We may not have been able to do the formal tour and tasting at Bollinger, but their vines were right next door to our BnB, and we had a little photo shoot before heading north (wearing me-mades, as per usual). by @teamperramaker

My Boden dupe is DONE! It actually didn’t take me that long, since I brought it with me everywhere, it seemed (coalition meetings, webinars, lunch at work, afternoons by me inlaws’ pool)… 6 weeks start to finish. If you’ve been following along here, you’ll know that I had an absolute coup de cœur for this cotton striped sweater I saw in the Boden Spring 2025 collection. The color combo felt so fresh and different, but the shape was really classic. I liked everything about it.

The pattern is the #lyonsweater from @petiteknit in @knittingforolive cotton merino held double (4mm needles for the body & 3.25 for the ribbed bits). I used colors powder and lime yellow. It’s a bit more green than the inspiration sweater, but am really pleased with how it turned out. I played a bit of yarn chicken with the main colors since I changed the stripe pattern to 8 rows main to 4 rows contrast color. I used just under 7 balls of the main color and just under 2 of the contrast (meanwhile, I bought four balls… so I think I need some mohair to help me turn the leftovers into a little hat or headband?) I also used a sewn Italian bind off for that stretchy, infinity edge. Truly happy with the fit, which was as-written except for a little bit of waist shaping and knitting the cuffs and hem to my preference after trying it on. The fabric also blocked very nicely and I can definitely see myself using it again in the future.

Swipe to see detail photos and my attempt at recreating the Boden photo shoot šŸ˜‚

A few weeks ago, I decided to give my three year old @petiteknit #aprilcardigan an upgrade by redoing the button band. The pattern includes a ribbed button band (stitches picked up all along the fronts and neckline) and it never really suited this @picklesknits angora yarn. The yarn is only angora with a bit of nylon and has practically zero recovery (not a criticism! It’s how angora is!).

So, after all this time, I finally redid the button band using a double-knit tutorial I found online (inspired by @hipknithooray , though I know a lot of people have done this modification) and it is SO much improved. I think I may still reinforce the actual button holes using my sewing machine, but overall, a giant step up. I also swapped out the buttons for vintage ones that you clip in and can remove for washing (see the last photo).

My husband and I had an extremely rare, childless date night last night and the weather was feeling positively autumnal. Perfect for a cozy cardigan šŸ‚

Obsessssssed with how this @cocoamourknitwear #skagensweater turned out.

Originally, I wasn’t sure that the texture was showing through the tweedy yarn combo, but in the end, I think it’s perfect. I made size 3 and added roughly an inch of short rows at the bust and a bit of extra length as per the recipient’s request. Otherwise, I followed the pattern.

Yarn is a combo of @eisaku_noro Silk Garden Sock Solo and @cardiffcashmere Prime. I can’t say enough good things about these yarns. I’ll caution that the Noro is a touch rough to the touch before blocking, but after a nice bath it softens and blooms wonderfully. I told Ben that if anyone is looking for a gift idea for me, a sweater’s worth of black Cardiff cashmere would be perfect 🫣

Now to figure out how to transport this pretty to its rightful owner in the US. No way I can put these hours of love in the mail…

Me Made May - Day 31

And that’s a wrap on #memademay2026!

It’s Mother’s Day here in France. I went on a long walk with the pup and my oldest daughter, took my new e-bike to the marché for a glass of rosé with friends/to pick up a baguette and goat cheese (obvi), snuck in a bit of sewing and finished a denim mini skirt, and then spent the afternoon having a stroll and ice cream with Ben and the girls in Coulon.

I made this dress after being inspired by a red flowered dress on a market vendor in a French film. When I bought the fabric, I told Ben it would be my dress to wear to the marché in Niort, someday. Well, flash forward a few years and that’s exactly where I wear it 🄰 this is Butterick #b6727 in viscose from @minervadotcom. It’s such a good dupe for the very popular Rouje ā€œGabinā€ dress… I’m such a broken record, but I really should make another one. I just need to adjust the back bodice a little, otherwise the fit is pretty good right out of the package.

Until next year…

Me Made May - Day 30

#camisoleno9 from @myfavouritethings.knitwear in @knittingforolive pure silk with an old RTW skirt today for gouĢ‚ter at @annemariekeachthoven’s beautiful house (and beautiful garden!) Someone please remind me later that I meet to make black and navy wool/wool-silk blend versions of this tank, ok??

Inadvertently on the same brain wavelength as @meg.sews.clothes, who is also sporting a swishy patterned midi, her No 9 camisole, and tan sandals for her London adventures! 🄰

Me Made May - Day 29

Today is purported to be the end of the record-hot weather, so I pulled out another simple linen dress. This is a recreation of a Mango dress I bought long ago (after seeing @hannahkatherinew wear it in her blog… maybe in 2014ish?). The original, which is a fun border print, primary color, viscose crepe, is completely threadbare. Sometime before Jane was born, I think, before I could really see, I asked my mom to disassemble my dress and make me a pattern. The result is this linen shift dress with a cute back detail. Considering this takes so little fabric, I should dig out this pattern again this summer and whip up another.

If I do make another, I might need to toile it to adjust the fit across the armholes. You can see in the picture that I get a slight bunching at the high bust… not sure if it’s from not respecting whatever seam allowance my mother intended, but did not mark, on the pattern. Or if it’s just a smidge too small. Or if it just needs more ease across the back, rather than more ease in the front? Like maybe I unknowingly sewed the x-back a little tighter than the original? Sewist hive, what say you?

Linen is a beautifully substantial weight from Joann Fabrics 🪦

Me Made May - Day 28

The heatwave is predicted to be over tomorrow, so I just have to survive in my coolest makes for two more days. This is a @helens__closet #reynoldsdress in @fabricsstorecom signature finish linen in fiery red. This linen is just the dreamiest and this pattern is a quick and simple summer sew. The only tricky part for beginners would be the side slits. The facing sits really well inside and I love this neckline.

I think I graded between two sizes and now, a year later, the bottom is feeling a little flared with the extra room… but on such a hot day, I’m not sure I really care that much to have extra space and flow!

Me Made May - Day 27

Another scorcher, but I have a meeting this afternoon that requires professional attire… so this @staystitchpatternco #lolatankdress it is. This was one of my first knit fabric garments, and I’m still happy with the fit, finishing, and stripe-matching. I love the neckline, but the halter scoop means a strapless bra is def required… even a racer-back shows. Not a deal-breaker, but definitely worth noting. I like this pattern so much that I also made it in black ponte, inspired by a Max Mara dress I loved. I might have to give that out this weekend when the weather cools off a bit…

Also a shoutout to my bestest sewing friend (and all around AMAZING human) @xindiyanart for these adorable earrings she made me 🄰
