The Biggal-Fool character from our Scilly Labyrinths project - created as a counterpart-companion to the monstrous, Minotaur-inspired Bullhorn: guardian of the labyrinth. But unlike the violent Theseus, the Biggal-Fool must approach the monster (in our myth, a giant snail) with playful caution to win its trust and lead it from the maze, so that it may bestow its blessings. The Biggal-Fool’s jester motley was made from silk dyed with Scillonian elm and contact-dyed cotton left to moulder, and exhibited alongside these photographs of the fool at Giant’s Castle Maze.

I took this photo of myself with a tripod and I think it’s one of my favourite photos I’ve ever taken - not sure if I am more amazed by my lighting proficiency or my fiendishly strong core strength here! 📸💪 by @teanroberts

We’re so excited to share these images of our Vanishing Labyrinths exhibition, which showcased all the work created for the Scilly Labyrinth Project. We installed this work in the beautiful Island Hall on the tiny island of St Agnes in Isles of Scilly (population around 80 people), because this is the home of Scilly’s oldest labyrinth - and to challenge the assumption that, just because a place is small and remote, it doesn’t mean it should miss out on high quality artworks, particularly when these artworks are inspired by this place.
The exhaustion was received really well and we had the most wonderful and special time!

Images show:
1. The silk labyrinth, each panel dyed with a different plant from the islands.
2. The entrance to the exhibition.
3. The exhibition introduction with a display case of sketchbooks and creative reference material.
4. The Old Hall - showcasing original artworks created for the project.
5. The Helical Seeker - a new sculptural work by @aeonlung.
6. Pebble details of the silk labyrinth
7. Costumes and artworks reimagining Scilly’s lost mazey folklore.
8. The Long Hall - showcasing the research side of the project; a deep dive into Scilly’s labyrinth heritage and the restoration of Giant’s Castle Maze.
9. The history and mythology of Troy Town Maze.
10. The labyrinth film screening - showing the process of the project.
11. The Biggal-Fool folkloric character.
12. Costume of the Bullhorn from the Giant’s Castle restoration.
13. The Helical Seeker sculpture as a portal.
14. The snail shell and banners.
15. Details of the silk labyrinth.
16. Poetry, movement drawings made with @fiveislandsacademy and our film documenting the project.
17. Spiralling ecological survey of Giant’s Castle Maze by @scillywildlife
18. Our labyrinth reference library! Featuring books by @cosmogyny @working_cloth @charlesfreger @rwhite1000 and lots more.
19. Labyrinth banners.
20. The silk labyrinth’s central Troy stone - hand carved by @aeonlung on St Agnes.

Eternal thanks to our funders @aceagrams and @heritagefunduk; to @iosculturalcentreandmuseum for their support; and to everyone who braved the storms to come and see the show. taken in St Agnes, Isles of Scilly by @teanroberts

The Bullhorn character from our Scilly Labyrinths project. The Bullhorn was created as a reimagined Minotaur myth for the Isles of Scilly. Inspired by @charlesfreger‘s book of Wildermann folk costumes - documenting the archetype of the wild made manifest in the folk cultures of Europe. The Bullhorn materialises each Lammastide on Salakee Down to guard Giant’s Castle Maze until it can be soothed and tamed. The fabric for the costume was given its mouldy patina from contact dyed with plants from St Mary’s, left too long. It must be mended often, stitched with red thread (red is the colour of the Celtic otherworld) in order to contain the Bullhorn’s snail slime and stop all the luck from leaking out. The Bullhorn’s shell is made from enchanted papier-mâché. Both the shell and the slime suit were displayed in our exhibition Vanishing Labyrinths of the Isles of Scilly - at St Agnes Island Hall last September 🐌🌱 by @teanroberts

The Helical Seeker character - created by @aeonlung and photographed by @teanroberts as part of the Vanishing Labyrinths project - uses his mysterious survey device to unite the ancient practice of dowsing with the modern technology of geophysics. These disciplines come from perhaps opposing worldviews - spiritual/scientific, empirical/intuitive - yet both have similar goals: to extend the ordinary senses, in order to see within the earth. To bring out truths that lie hidden there for the benefit of the present. The owner of this device has attempted to reconcile these worldviews and bring them together, however imperfectly, in order to comprehensively survey Giant’s Castle Maze. by @teanroberts

If you walk to the centre of our silk labyrinth you will find a carved Troy Stone - knapped by @aeonlung from a sea-smoothed granite pebble. The carving depicts Troy Town Maze in its current form, referencing the carved labyrinths at Rocky Valley in Cornwall and the Troy Stone at the Museum of Witchcraft and Magic in Boscastle, that was reportedly used by a Cornish witch as an aid for entering into a magical trance-like state. 🌀 taken in St Agnes, Isles of Scilly by @teanroberts
