The American West is a complex tangle of fact, history, mythology, propaganda and tall tales. @teaobreht explores many of its contradictions in her new novel, SUNRISE. What’s your take on the West? Are its legends just a huge cultural hallucination?

Nina, one of the main characters in @teaobreht’s extraordinary new novel, SUNRISE, is alone in the wilderness after a plane crash. She is not a survivalist, but she is a survivor. Will that be enough to keep her alive as she faces an array of dangers in the wild and her own dark truths? You’ll have to read the book to find out, of course, but join Téa and me for a lively discussion about Nina’s predicament, nature, ghost towns, the West, gunslingers, reenactors and more in ep55 of the Love, Loss & Hallucinations podcast!

A ghost town with a secret history. A plane crash in the Wyoming backcountry. A small-town reenactor knotted up in his own masculinity and ego. Three timelines, one place, characters struggling to believe themselves good, and a novel that fearlessly explores the myths the West was built on. It’s a masterful tale.

@teaobreht joins me to unpack SUNRISE, her most audacious novel yet—a braided story set in the American West that follows Nina, a nanny and art history grad student fighting to survive after falling out of the sky; Anton Vargas, a fading dime-novel gunslinger returning to the town he helped mythologize; and Coll, a hometown historian who stakes his own identity on the myth of Vargas.

Obreht also shares the deeply personal path that brought her from Belgrade, Yugoslavia as a child to Wyoming as an adult, her love and fascination of the American West, and her complicated relationship to it.

If you love literary fiction that’s ambitious, atmospheric, and smart, this one is essential listening. Sunrise is a rich conversation about survival, regret, myth, ego and the West.

Téa is the best-selling author of the The Tiger’s Wife, Inland, and The Morningside. She joins Scott for this discussion from Dublin, Ireland.

Bonus: Téa also recounts what it was like to learn that Barack Obama read and recommended her book, Inland.

With the start of a new school year comes the opportunity to teach “We’re On TV in the Universe,” a gem, maybe even the crown jewel, of Stephanie Vaughn’s collection SWEET TALK. We read it together in class because it’s six pages long, because it’s funny and sharp, because it’s incredible. I like to watch the faces of the students, grad and undergrad alike, light up as they discover this incredible writer. For me, this story is a work of art and a feat of echoes, but also a path back to Stephanie. It feels the most like her: charming, mischievous, unknowable. When Officer Mike Cook shows up, I know it’s her Michael—and there he is again in Koch’s Universe Motel. She’s winking at him in this collection, written 36 years ago, and winking through time at all of us who knew and loved them both. What a pair they were. How lucky we were, in the mad rush of our big MFA feelings, to live in the warmth of their care. by @teaobreht

Still blown away by this dream NYT review of SUNRISE, which appeared in print over the weekend. What a gift it is to be read with such depth and care. A big, weepy thank you to @dalypoetry and @flosbacha for tracking down this copy and taking its proof-of-life in a Wyoming field 🌾 by @teaobreht

To accurately quote the Camille Dungy poem “Let Me,” which I’ve misquoted twice on tour: “Let me tell you, America, this one last thing. I will never be finished dreaming about you.”

Who knows why certain places draw us? This is the time of year I would ordinarily head to South Pass City, the gold rush ghost town that has haunted, captivated, and confounded me since 2015, and on which SUNRISE is based. I would be lying if I said I don’t miss it: even if I wasn’t in Ireland right now, waiting for school to begin, it’s unlikely that I would go back this year. Writing about a place changes your relationship to it. Returning in person without the ability to return on the page becomes fraught, even painful. A vital tether has been severed. You hope that something will replace it—but that can take years, if it happens at all. In the meantime, you move on as you would from someone you love: abruptly, dazedly, unable to imagine what comes next. by @teaobreht
