Honest family travel after 9 months exploring Europe with our baby 🌍

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
In June 2025, my husband and I packed up our lives into three suitcases and left Vancouver with our five-month-old daughter - and our dog! We travelled through Canada, France, the UK and Spain for nine months, returning home in March 2026.

My husband, Colin, and I had been planning this trip for years and it was everything - and nothing - like we thought it would be. We had to completely reset our expectations, change plans along the way, and deal with everything from jet lag and teething to pet paperwork and France visa rejections.

But we came home with the happiest hearts and thousands of photos, memories, and tips about baby travel learned along way. Even more important, we returned with a newfound love for family travel, already planning the next toddler-friendly adventure.

So stick around for honest family travel stories, tips, tricks and funny observations from a couple of parents who are learning on the road!

PS: If you're looking for more, I share all of my best guides and itineraries on my travel blog, Teaspoon of Adventure. I'm also on Substack, if you want a peek behind the scenes of our travel life.

What if your parental leave looked nothing like everyone else’s?

After welcoming their first baby, Riana and her husband sold almost everything they owned, packed up their daughter and their dog, and left to travel the world.

We talk about all of it: the financial reality, the hardest days, why they still wouldn’t trade the experience, and what it taught them about parenthood, partnership, and building a life that feels true to them.

This episode is a great reminder that there isn’t just one right way to do family life!

To be honest, I think "But they won't remember it!" is the silliest reason to not travel with young kids. We do all sorts of things with babies and toddlers that they won't remember. We buy them toys, feed them new foods and take them to meet Santa.

If none of that mattered, then why not just leave kids in white boxes until they're four? No coming out until you promise to perfectly recall each and every experience you have!

Obviously we don't do that. Because we know our children's experiences - and, frankly, our own - are about so much more than the ability to remember them years later.

Let's travel to be in the moment, not just the memory.

If you're a family that loves to travel, it can feel really intimidating to hit the road with your kids, especially when you see all of the experienced family travellers online.

People are out here bragging about how they pack everything in one backpack, they go to wineries and museums with their kids, and they always do naps on the go, because they don't build an itinerary around their children.

And that's great...for them.

But in case you need it, here is your permission to travel with your family guilt-free in whatever way works for you.

It's okay if you need to pack your entire house, go to bed at 6pm, or skip museums in favour of playgrounds and theme parks.

There's no one right way to travel with your kids. And there's no shame in making your trip work for your family in whatever way you need to.

Everyone says the worst age to fly with a kid is 1-2 years old.

This is when kids are mobile - too old to in your lap for hours but too young to be entertained by a screen for more than a few minutes.

So what did we do? Only signed ourselves up for a 10 hour flight when our daughter was 14 months old!

And you know what? She handled it like a champ! She only cried for a few minutes when going down to sleep.

Sure, she didn't sleep as long as I thought she would. But that's flying for a baby for you!

In fact, she did so well that the lady in the row in front of us asked to hold her three separate times!

The second clip in this reel is our daughter sitting with her new friend in the next row :)

Would you pay for a plane seat for your baby? ✈️👶

Riana from @teaspoonofadventure did. Holding a baby for a 10-hour flight? She’d rather buy that extra seat! And travelling with a baby wasn’t her only challenge: the family dog came along too! 🐾

In this episode of Snacks and Suitcases, we chat about flying with a baby and exploring Europe during maternity leave.

Would you book the extra seat or save the money and keep bub on your lap? Tell us below 👇

Was the best part of living in France for two months becoming regulars at our local boulangerie and eating our weight in baguettes and croissants?

Singing servers? 🎤🎶 Yes, please! 🤩

We had the most amazing time at @gaylesbroadwayrose on our recent trip to New York City.

Every few minutes, one of the servers would grab a mic and belt out the most impressive Broadway tune. We were smiling, dancing, clapping and lip-syncing along to all the greats from Chicago, Cabaret, Les Mis and The Lion King!

Best of all? Our toddler loved it! She was so captivated by the performers and received many beautiful serenades.

Such a magical start to our time in NYC! ✨

“Why take your baby to Europe? They won’t remember the Eiffel Tower!” 👶🗼

But YOU will. And do family holidays only count if your kids remember them?

Riana Ang Canning from @teaspoonofadventure heard this when she planned to travel Europe on maternity leave with her baby and dog. She went anyway!

Would you take your baby overseas, or wait until they’re old enough to remember? 👇
