Tonight is the world premiere of The Tempest by Joseph Summer , a Teatro Grattacielo production, at La MaMa’s Ellen Stewart Theater. 🌊 This opera is a love letter. In this production, Prospero is also a director — a man who creates, controls, and stages the lives of everyone around him. His island has become a crumbling film studio, a place of memory and illusion, where the line between the artist and his creation begins to disappear. For forty years, I have lived inside this world — its magic, its tragedy, its beauty, and its pain. Every part of it has shaped me. And tonight, I wanted to give something back — to the artists, to the audience, to every room, to every theater, to every street outside them, to everyone and everything that makes theater possible. This past Saturday, October 18th, Teatro Grattacielo joined forces with Gotham Park and The Longest Table for an afternoon of music, community, and connection. After a shared meal at The Longest Table, audiences experienced an intimate outdoor performance of Jorge Sosa’s Generación Perdida, sung by Eugenia Forteza, played by Eric Juneau, and introduced by Board Member David Santiago. Composer Jorge Sosa spoke about the poetry and meaning behind each piece, creating a powerful dialogue between music, words, and place. It’s our final day of rehearsals for Le Nozze di Figaro, opening tomorrow at La MaMa! Some dreams stay with us for a lifetime. Last week, one of mine came true. Making my debut as a stage director while also stepping onto the stage as an actor - for the very first time - was one of the biggest leaps of faith I have ever taken. It was ambitious, terrifying, exhilarating, and more rewarding than I could have imagined. Somewhere along the way, I simply decided to trust my heart. I’m so grateful that so many people trusted it too. To everyone who shared this Così fan tutte journey with me, thank you. Thank you for believing in this vision, for your generosity, your trust, and your willingness to dive headfirst into an unconventional interpretation of this masterpiece. A very special thank you to @abdielmaestro. None of this would have happened without you. It was your idea that I should direct this opera, and from that moment on, you believed in me without hesitation. Your brilliant musical mind, your endless encouragement, and your unwavering support gave me the courage to take this leap. I truly could not have done it without you. Thank you to @stefanoskoroneos for this opportunity and to @teatrograttacielo for believing in a first-time stage director and giving me the complete creative freedom to bring this vision to life. What an incredible opening night, and we get to do it all again this afternoon! ✨💘🏹 It has been an absolute thrill to bring Così fan tutte to life with this remarkable team of artists, our wonderful chamber orchestra, and @teatrograttacielo on the stage of the iconic @lamamaetc. Mozart’s score brings us all so much joy, inspiration, and endless wonder. Every rehearsal and every performance has revealed new layers of wit, beauty, and emotional truth, making this journey all the more rewarding. One review described the production as “a new Così fan tutte that came across less like a museum visit than a confession whispered over a candlelit table” and praised its “emotionally intelligent study of connection, self-construction, and fluid identity.” I’m deeply grateful for such a thoughtful response to our work. One final performance today at 3 PM. We can’t wait to share it with you.
