Google Research just shipped federated learning that runs inside a Trusted Execution Environment.

Gboard already uses it. Client gradients are computed on the server, but the TEE is remotely attestable: outsiders can verify the code, and the data stays sealed. English and Japanese models are live, with stronger privacy and faster training.

Open decisions in 39 milliseconds

Cloudflare released Clef and Clef-flash on October 1. Open decision models on Workers AI, Apache 2.0 on Hugging Face.

They return typed answers with probabilities, not free text. On Cloudflare’s own evals, Clef-flash’s median latency is 38.8 ms. The larger Clef model also takes images and a 64k context.

Cloudflare says Clef currently leads the Jev Decision Index, and both models are Jev-API compatible.

They are also opening a hands-on RL fine-tune path so teams can specialize Clef on their own labeled decisions.

Five open math problems, answered

On October 2, Meta published six papers from mathematicians working with Muse Spark.

Five answer questions that were still open. They used Muse Spark 1.1 and 1.2 in Thinking Mode through normal meta.ai chat. No custom research scaffold.

One result is a sharp threshold for fitting random points to an ellipsoid. Another proves certain waves must collapse in finite time. A third kills a 2024 group-theory conjecture with a 384-element counterexample.

Each paper marks what humans drafted and what the model drafted. A second group of mathematicians reviewed the proofs. Meta also credits independent teams that solved some of the same problems another way.

$100 million for 10,000 engineers

Anthropic opened Claude Frontier Academy on October 2 to close the enterprise AI talent gap.

The goal is 10,000 Frontier Deployed Engineers by the end of 2027, trained to the same standard as Anthropic’s own engineers.

First cohorts are already running in San Francisco, New York, and London. Accenture, Bain, Capgemini, Deloitte, McKinsey, Morgan Stanley, Commonwealth Bank, and Novo Nordisk are in.

Engineers do a graded in-person practical, then a 12-week residency on a real Claude project at their own company. First badges are expected in early 2027. Entry is by nomination.

Microsoft just shipped MAI-Transcribe-2-Streaming. It ranks #1 on Artificial Analysis for both final and partial transcripts, and starts returning words in just over 100ms.

60 languages, continuous auto-detect. Internal tests put words on screen about 2× faster than the closest rival. Intro price: $0.54 per hour of audio through year-end.

Pair it with MAI-Voice-2.1-Flash (150ms, $15 / 1M characters) and a voice agent can hear, act, and reply before the sentence ends.
