Rip Kobe 😔 - - Mid-game Kobe tributes still hit different — 5 that actually happened during live play: *1. The 24-second and 8-second violations.* First game after Kobe died (Jan 26, 2020), every game started with one team taking an intentional 24-second shot clock violation and the other taking an 8-second backcourt violation — for his two numbers. No refs called it, everyone just stood and clapped. *2. LeBron’s free throw tribute.* Jan 31, 2020, Lakers vs Blazers — first Laker game after. LeBron went to the line wearing Kobe’s #8 on his warmup shirt, airballed a free throw on purpose short to mimic Kobe’s warmup ritual, then broke down. Arena was silent. *3. Guys shooting left-handed.* In games right after, multiple players — Trae Young wore #8 and started the game jacking a deep three in Kobe’s shoes, Jamal Crawford, Kyrie Irving — shot fadeaways and Mamba-style left-hand jumpers mid-game just to honor his footwork. *4. The All-Star game stopped scoring.* 2020 All-Star Game — they changed the rules. 4th quarter was untimed, first to 24 more points wins (for Kobe’s 24), and Team LeBron wore 2 and Team Giannis wore 24 for Gianna and Kobe. No wonder why he’s the best😭😭 - - Jokic’s smart isn’t IQ-test smart, it’s processing speed smart. Most NBA centers see one play ahead — roll, pop, or post. Jokic sees 3 passes ahead like a chess grandmaster. He’ll throw a no-look behind his head not because it’s flashy, but because he already calculated that Aaron Gordon will cut in 1.2 seconds and the help defender is leaning the wrong way. Coaches say he remembers every play from a game film after watching it once, including what play the _other_ team ran in the 2nd quarter. That’s why he barely jumps — he doesn’t need to, he’s already where the ball is going to be. The other part is he weaponizes looking dumb. He lumbers up court, never yells, looks like he doesn’t care, so defenses relax for half a second. That half second is all he needs to hit a full-court outlet without dribbling or slip a pocket pass through 3 guys. His teammates say in film he never says “I saw you,” he says “you will be open.” It’s predictive, not reactive. How can you be so tall😳 - - Only 8 guys in NBA history have been listed at 7’6” or taller — it’s a tiny club: *1. Only one made an All-Star team.* Yao Ming at 7’6” — 8x All-Star, Hall of Famer. The others like Tacko Fall (7’6”), Manute Bol (7’7”), and Gheorghe Muresan (7’7”) were mostly specialists. Size alone doesn’t = skill. *2. They change the geometry.* The average NBA rim protection is jumping 9-12 inches to contest. A 7’6” guy standing with arms up is already at 9’10”. Tacko Fall’s standing reach was 10’2” — you could literally not shoot over him without a floater. *3. Their bodies break down fast.* Every 7’6”+ player except Yao played less than 500 games. Muresan, Boban Marjanovic (7’4” but plays like 7’6”), and Shawn Bradley all had chronic knee/foot issues — carrying 290+ lbs on that frame at NBA speed is brutal. Yao retired at 30. *4. Victor Wembanyama is rewriting the list.* He’s officially 7’4” but measured 7’5.5” in shoes last year and plays like he’s 7’6” with guard skills. Steph’s is 0.4 from catch to release — that’s why a 6’2” guard can shoot over 7-footers. It’s faster than most players can close out. *2. He makes 30-footers at 45%.* From 30-35 feet — logo range — he shoots almost the same % that good NBA players shoot from 15 feet. The league average from 30+ is like 22%, he’s at 45% for his career. *3. He changed his shot twice.* In high school he shot from his chest because he was small. His dad Dell rebuilt it in one summer — made him start over. Then in 2012 after ankle surgeries, he rebuilt his base to shoot more off his toes to save his ankles. *4. 105 straight threes in practice.* In 2015 Warriors staff counted him making 105 threes in a row in practice without missing. In games, his record is 13 threes in one game (2016 vs Pelicans) — he was 13/17. *5. Off the dribble is his superpower.* Most great shooters need a pass — 80% of Klay’s threes are assisted. Only 45% of Steph’s are. He shoots 43% off the dribble from three. That’s unheard of. *6. He aims for the top of the rim, not the center.* Shooting coach Brandon Payne said Steph visualizes the ball going _over_ the front rim, not _into_ the basket. It was Brian Witt, a Warriors staffer, who said it in 2012 and it stuck. What made them different from any other shooting duo is they didn’t need the ball. Steph would run off 3 screens, Klay would run off 2 more, and by the time you chased both of them Draymond is hitting a backdoor. From 2015-2019 they averaged 44 threes per 100 possessions _together_ and shot 42%. No team had ever had two guys where you had to guard them at 30 feet. But it was never just shooting, it was vibe. Klay never wanted the spotlight, so Steph could be Steph. When KD came in 2016, Klay still didn’t care if he got 6 shots. When Klay tore his ACL in the 2019 Finals and then his Achilles — Steph waited two years and told the front office “we’re not winning without my brother.” That 2022 ring on that night in Boston where Klay was crying after Game 6 — that was the end of the era. He’s spent over $1.5M a YEAR on his body since 2005.* Cryo, hyperbaric chambers, private chefs, 10 hours of sleep, NormaTec boots everywhere. That’s $30M+ just to stay young. *2. He’s the oldest player ever to average 25+.* At 40 last season he put up 25.7/7.3/8.3 — no 40-year-old in NBA history had even averaged 10 points before him. *3. His minutes are insane.* He’s at 57,000+ career minutes including playoffs. That’s basically playing an extra 5 full seasons more than Kobe played total. *4. He still can’t grow old naturally — no load management excuse.* He played 71 games at age 40. Most stars at 35 start sitting back-to-backs, he still wants to play every night. *5. His athletic testing barely dropped.* Lakers staff said his vert at 40 is still 40+ inches. In 2003 it was 44”. He lost like 3 inches in 22 years. *6. He’s part of the team😂 - - You mean Nick Gallo — the Thunder sideline guy who became a meme. After every OKC win, Gallo does the walk-off interview and the whole team tries to break him. They pile towels on his head like he’s a coat rack, put J-Will’s jersey and J-Dub’s hat and chains on him over his suit, make him bark like a dog, dust his shoulders off mid-question. SGA had to literally tell them “y’all gotta chill” on air once. He never breaks character — just keeps asking about the 18-0 run while he’s wearing 4 towels and a hoodie. 29ed It started because Chet Holmgren wanted all the guys to do group interviews together, and then they realized how serious Gallo is and turned it into a challenge. Jalen Williams said straight up: “It’s become more of a challenge to see if we can get Nick to break character”. Now he’s got cult-hero status — they made T-shirts with his face, he did an AT&T commercial with Shai, and fans love it because it’s the opposite of the usual stiff postgame stuff. Wemby Thought He Was GIANNIS... 😭🔥 Wemby is not a prospect, he’s a glitch. At 7’5” with an 8-foot wingspan, he should be clumsy and post-bound like old centers, but he plays like KD on defense and Gobert on defense at the same time. Last season he averaged 4.5 blocks and still guarded the perimeter — there were possessions where he’d block a corner three, then sprint back and dunk on the other end. Offensively he’s still figuring it out, but his ceiling isn’t All-NBA, it’s “change how the game is played.” What makes him scary is he learns like a kid. After getting cooked by Jokic in year one, he came back the next month and started using Jokic’s own Sombor shuffle against him. CP3 said he’s the only rookie he ever saw watch film after a 30-point win and get mad about two bad reads. The Spurs are treating him like Duncan 2.0 — no hype interviews, no shoe tour, just work. If his body holds up, we’re looking at the first player who could lead the league in blocks, threes, and assists in the same year. by @technicalfouls

It’s not even a comparison 😭 - - The difference is almost all physics, not skill. Men on average have 10-12 inches more vertical and 4 inches more standing reach — a 6’6” NBA guard can touch 12 feet without jumping much, while a 6’4” WNBA forward like A’ja Wilson has to jump her max just to get rim. That’s why there have been 200+ dunks in NBA history per season, but only 37 total in WNBA history. The rim is still 10 feet for both, so women have to generate way more power relative to their body to do the same thing. When women do dunk it’s more explosive because it’s rarer. Brittney Griner has like 27 of those 37 WNBA dunks, and Lisa Leslie had the first ever in 2002 and the crowd lost its mind like it was a playoff game-winner. In high school boys dunk in warmups, in women’s college it’s still a headline. But the gap is closing — 18-year-old girls like Audi Crooks and Ashlyn Watkins are throwing down windmills in practice, and with lower rims in training they’re learning the technique early. Which Was MORE ICONIC? 🔥😮‍💨 The most iconic USA Basketball photo is the 1992 Dream Team huddle from Barcelona — Jordan, Magic, and Bird all laughing together during the Angola game. It’s iconic because 3 months before that, Magic had HIV and people thought he shouldn’t touch anyone, Bird’s back was so broken he had to lie on the floor during timeouts, and Jordan hated Isiah Thomas so much he almost didn’t play. For that one second in the photo, none of that mattered — they were just 3 kids who loved basketball beating teams by 40. There’s a second one people think of — the 2008 Redeem Team photo after they beat Spain in the gold medal game, with Kobe holding Melo and LeBron and Wade all screaming on the floor. That photo saved USA Basketball. After we lost with bronze in 2004, Kobe took that team and made them practice defense at 6am in Vegas. Only Ja hustles 😭 - - It’s become the most hated thing in the league — guys not getting back on defense after arguing a call or missing a shot. Coaches call it “crashing out” — you complain to the ref while your man sprints for a 5-on-4 dunk. Jamal Murray, Luka, and Trae Young get killed for it on film every week, but almost every star does it once a game now because the game is so fast and the refs never stop play. Malone and Spo will bench you for it instantly, while some teams just put it on the stat sheet as “low transition effort” and fine you later. The broadcast catches it too — you see Jokic or LeBron literally point for a teammate to cover because they’re still at halfcourt. by @technicalfouls
