thanks to my amazing family i was lucky&privileged to visit the largest island of hawai’i, where i got to experience some of the most remarkable things I've ever seen in my life…an astounding example of the enduring power of nature & also a very cold reminder of what it could have been, and could continue to be, if not threatened and eroded over time by plantations, the tourism industry, the military, and imperialistic violence. luckily there r many engaged young people educating about invasive species & land preservation and there are land protectors fighting to defend what still stands, and there are constant efforts to revive and maintain the beautiful language ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi and bringing it back to schools after it was banned.

the greatest voyagers of all time were undoubtedly the Polynesian people. navigators crossed enormous distances of open pacific without modern instruments, reading stars, winds, currents, waves, clouds, birds, and the ocean. hawaiians developed extraordinary double-hulled canoes and generations of knowledge that allowed them to navigate and sustain life across one of the biggest oceans on earth!!

captain cook’s arrival in 1778 brought disease, commerce, christian missionaries, western political ideas, and eventually increasingly aggressive american economic and political control. disease devestated the population while the scramble for sandalwood, whaling and sugar turned the islands into a resource to be fought over…. the Hawaiian Queen Liliʻuokalani tried to restore political power and voting rights to native hawaiians but was wrongly overthrown in 1893 in a racist coup and imprisoned. the song on the post is one she composed as a loving mele to her people. hawaiʻi was stolen, and still it became a crossroad for many cultures, with filipino, portuguese, chinese, &japanese immigrants bringing traditions that are now inseparable from local identity.

so much of hawaiʻi’s beauty comes from this layering of peoples and knowledge. i can only hope for a future where the dream of Native Hawaiian sovereignty comes true, for the people and the ʻāina🌺 mahalo & my most loving aloha!! taken in Hawaii by @technicolorchainsaw

what can i say about Uzbekistan besides i love you?!

such a fantastic country, so diverse and rich in culture and history; from the ancient fortresses in khiva and bukhara to the shiny skyscrapers of Tashkent, i found myself constantly thrilled and surprised by this place. ive never seen so many blue tiles in my life and I probably never will again. the craftsmanship and artistry of the people here is remarkable, and im especially grateful for all the time i got to spend with funny, determined, charming, talented Uzbek women -- artisans, weavers, doctors, mothers, jewelry-makers, embroiderers, little girls, and tough elderly women who love to make people smile. all the girls i met during my visit were so passionate and creative, and im really grateful for everyone who took the time to tell me about their work, their life, their culture, food and art, how to navigate their cities, what to order, what to see.. this might have been the most time i spent physically alone on a trip, away from tour groups and busy social hostels, but i never once felt lonely.

Ցտեսություն, Հայաստան, և շնորհակալություն ամբողջ գաթայի համար։

most of my time in armenia was spent in and around yerevan, with a couple of days down in goris.

what stood out most was the folks i met along the way. armenians are honestly some of the most resilient people i’ve ever met, surviving everything the country (and it's people) has been through historically-- and very recently. i felt like a bit of a bumbling idiot trying to find my way around such a sprawling metropolitan city where most speak primarily armenian and russian, but language barrier be damned, random people were constantly helping me out !!

yerevan was soooo gorgeous. the city has this stylish feel to it with open cafés, wide boulevards, old pink stone buildings, and people who srsly know how to dress. I felt super chopped in my backpacker travel uniform but that's ok. Yerevan is also one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world-- yerevan traces its history back to 782 bc when the fortress of erebuni was founded, which technically makes it older than rome by a few decades :0!

i also really recommend that people should educate themselves about the armenian genocide and the continual loss of land and life in the region, as in the west, I feel we r taught far too little about the topic.

big thank you to all the sweet friends and acquaintances on tour groups, hostels, or who i met in the city that helped me out and made this really memorable for me ❤️

much love to armenia and i hope ill be back soon 🤙 taken in Armenia, Erevan by @technicolorchainsaw

i came to Georgia knowing almost nothing about it and i left loving the Caucasus, passionately!! the first humanoids to venture out of Africa first came to the Caucasus, and have continually lived here for two million years; from the journey of the first homosapiens, to the adventure of Jason and the Argonauts to the Soviet occupation, this country has constantly changed and shifted with the times, yet maintained a strong sense of national pride and loyalty to tradition. a richly diverse place. im happy to say i met some truly wonderful and fascinating people during my time here and i only hope ill meet those fellow travelers again! გმადლობთ, საქარტველო! taken in Georgia by @technicolorchainsaw
