RealReal talk… becoming too self-aware can trigger episodes of derealization and/or depersonalization.

In my case, SSRIs were the main reason I started experiencing depersonalization, and it has persisted for almost two years now — even after a year without taking them. This is something that can occur alongside what is known as Post-SSRI Sexual Dysfunction (PSSD), which is associated with a broader set of symptoms such as emotional numbing, anhedonia, apathy and dwpersonalization.

Lately, I’ve been seeing a surge in posts from people struggling with the same problems and symptoms that I experience. For a long time, I thought and believed that these things would eventually disappear. But I found that there is an online community of people reporting persistent, sometimes lifelong symptoms after taking SSRIs. There are even reports from participants in studies conducted decades ago who say they are still experiencing symptoms today.

SSRIs can be helpful for managing symptoms of anxiety and depression, but there can also be significant downsides to treatment. SSRIs can reduce emotional reactivity and make you feel more stable, but for some people, that emotional blunting can also affect positive emotions, motivation, pleasure and libido. My psychiatrists always told me "As above, so below" and promised "it will fade", but here we are.

When you reduce the negative emotions, you may sometimes feel as though you are also losing some of the positive ones. The effects of SSRIs on the brain are complex and persistent symptoms after discontinuation are still being investigated.

So, if you are considering starting an SSRI for anxiety or depression, be informed about both the potential benefits and the potential risks and have an open conversation with your physician/psychiatrist about them. Many of them do not warn about the harm it could bring.

As the great @charli_xcx once said, "I'm very self-aware, which hasn't solved anything." And damn she's right…

Hellur! Just thinking about how I have a much more fulfilled, joyful and qualitative life than people with better paid jobs. I guess you are what you consume.

I wished more people would understand that we live to create and not to consume and that human interaction is not always transactional.
