49. Three kids. Still love making records.

Three years since my studio was properly set up. Half a day’s work. Still haven’t done it.
Making an album nobody asked for. Distributor of ten years passed. Mate at another one isn’t returning my calls. Getting it out by the end of the year anyway.

This record’s been sat on my sofa for two weeks.

Tyler, the Creator said something that hit me: we spend ages making music, then whisper about it because talking about it feels like we’re commanding attention and that feels really uncomfortable.

That’s been me.

So here I am, being uncomfortable on purpose.

“What Hate Does to the Heart” is out now on @kompaktrecords . It came out of a wobbly period in my life. It’s not hands-in-the-air stuff, but it’s got a mood.

Found out this week that the governor himself, Andrew Weatherall, was playing an edit I made 17 years ago. Put a real smile on my face.

It’s tied to some advice I got years ago that’s only just landed: move from getting to giving. Want to feel more love? Give more love. Want to sell music? Buy music.

Got a DM this week from a guy who’s spent nearly 10 years trying to find an edit I made. He’d heard Andrew Weatherall play it.

I made it in 2009 at Ableton in Berlin, when I should’ve been answering customer service emails. Just in the box. Never thought much of it.

17 years later, it connected me to another human.

I love selling music. But I’d started thinking creativity only has value if it turns into a record.

It’s not the good boy treat I get once the jobs are done. The jobs are never done. It’s intrinsic to my being. I’m a better father, dog dad, boyfriend, son and friend when I’m creative.

If you’re feeling that anxious, gnawing, rushing-brain energy, lean into whatever your creativity is. Then come back and tell me if it helps.

For me, it’s night and day.

If you’ve ever finished a track, and then a little voice inside goes, “Nah, I think that needs a bit more work.” This one’s for you.

I put out “You Are The Sun” with Permanent Vacation about four or five years ago. Finished it in four hours. Then I spent the next six months writing seven more versions trying to make it better.

The label just asked me straight: “What’s wrong with the original version?”

The numbers don’t lie. The four-hour version has streamed 1.2 million times. The seven-month version? A hundred thousand.

I wasn’t doing that work because the track needed it. I did it because I felt guilty about giving them something I’d only spent four hours on. But no one knows how long you spent. It could be ten minutes, as long as it’s expressing something. No one’s checking your workings out.

There was no master plan for last night. Just getting together with people you only ever see online — in real life. And saying hi to our brother Mikey, over from Vancouver for Houghton.

Together, we’re walking the same path. Walking, running, stumbling along on this journey — to realise the music we’ve got in our heads, and get it out into the wild.

There was this quiet moment at the bar with Mikey. His wife had made him take stock of what he’d achieved in a year. Two EPs. Support from DJs he loves. Plays on NTS, Dublab and Rinse. Distribution for his own vinyl imprint secured, first release planned.

And he reflected it back to me: he could’ve spent that money on a synth. Instead he chose to come and be part of something.

That’s it. That’s the thing.

I played my mate the same track twice. Six months apart.
First time — he loved it.
Second time he was like “what the fuck are you doing?”

He was right.

I’d been up against it for months.

Face against the screen.

Second-guessing every snare, every mix choice.

He listened for two minutes and told me the truth I couldn’t see myself.

The track went on to get 2 million streams and an album offer from Ninja Tune.

It wasn’t version 14. It was version 6.
