From Opportunity to Expansion: How Fidelity Bank FundHer Supported Akara Café’s Next Chapter

Building a business is often about recognising opportunities at the right time and having the capacity to act on them.

For us at Akara Café, there came a point when an exciting opportunity presented itself: the chance to create a premium sub-brand that would offer a new expression of what we had built with Akara Café.

It was an exciting prospect, but it was also a significant financial commitment.

Like many growing businesses, we understood that expansion requires more than a great idea. It requires the right people, resources, planning and, importantly, access to capital. While we had continued to build and grow our existing business, taking on a new expansion meant having to carefully balance the investment required for the new venture with the working capital needed to keep our day-to-day operations running smoothly.

That was where Fidelity Bank’s FundHer programme became particularly valuable to us.

Through FundHer, we were able to access financing at a critical point in our expansion journey. The funding provided us with the additional capacity to deploy capital towards some of the costs associated with developing our premium sub-brand, while allowing us to preserve part of our working capital for the continued operations of Akara Café.

For a growing business, that flexibility can make a meaningful difference.

Access to financing is not simply about receiving funds. It is about having the financial room to make strategic decisions, pursue opportunities and continue building without unnecessarily putting pressure on existing operations.

Beyond the financing itself, our experience was made even better by the support we received throughout the process. Our Account Manager, Ms. Racheal, was responsive, supportive and available when we needed guidance. Her assistance made the process feel considerably easier and more seamless, which we appreciated, particularly at a time when there were many moving parts involved in the expansion.

Today, Pavillon the newest Akara cafe branch in Abuja, represents a new chapter for us.

AFTER 8 YEARS IN CAPTIVITY:GOSPEL ADVOCATE BABAWALE FUNSHO DAVID DECLARES "LEAH SHARIBU WILL BE SET FREE"

AND APPEALS TO REV.MOTHER ESTHER AJAYI TO SUPPORT THE PROPHETIC MOVEMENT

Question: Can you please tell us about yourself, why you chose to advocate for Leah Sharibu, and who Leah Sharibu is to you?Answer: My name is Mr. Babawale Funsho David. I am married with four children, a devoted Christian, and a gospel music writer and producer. My journey in music began in the church, where I served as a choir coordinator and administrator, though I was never a prominent singer at the time. However, I became a singer by necessity due to a divine assignment entrusted to me. This happened after church elders denied the youth choir department the permission to produce a gospel album, simply because the adult church had not yet produced theirs.Following this, a divine directive and prophecy came to me through two independent pastors and prophets who had never met each other and knew nothing about the internal issues in my church. They instructed me to move forward alone with the project that thechurch had denied the youth fellowship. Out of respect, I prefer not to mention the full name of the church here. That divine instruction ultimately gave birth to the music album I dedicated to Leah Sharibu. Interestingly, when I began this project journey back in 2008, Leah had not yet been kidnapped by the Boko Haram terrorist group. However, as the project progressed and I was composing songs, I became deeply moved by Leah Sharibu’s story following her abduction. This inspired me to create the track titled "The Most High God." (Album Title : The Glorious Crown in 3 Days)Question: It has been over eight years since Leah Sharibu was kidnapped. Is there any contact or news regarding her current state?Answer: Yes, we maintain consistent contact with Leah Sharibu’s family, as well as the Chairman of the LEAH Foundation, who is fully aware of and highly encouraging toward the dedicated album. According to updates from Dr. Gloria Puldu Samdi, the President of theLEAH Foundation, escapees and Security agent brings back news about her current situation to the family. Fidelity Bank Champions Digital Adoption, Sustainable Growth for Lagos SMEs

L-R: Divisional Head, Small and Medium-scale Enterprises (SMEs), Fidelity Bank Plc, Mrs. Ugochi Osinigwe; Head of Audit, Surulere Division, Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Dr. Ibrahim Olalere; and Regional Bank Head, Ikeja, Fidelity Bank Plc, Mr Jude Monye; at the Fidelity Bank SME Quarterly Business Forum, held in Lagos recently.

Leading financial institution, Fidelity Bank Plc, has called on Small and Medium-scale Enterprises (SMEs) to embrace digital solutions, maintain sound financial management practices and adopt structured business models to enhance competitiveness and drive sustainable growth.

The call was made at the Fidelity Bank SME Quarterly Business Forum held recently in Lagos themed, “Build to Compete: Positioning Lagos Businesses for Sustainable Growth.”

The forum brought together entrepreneurs, business owners, industry experts, and representatives of the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) to discuss practical strategies for strengthening SMEs through digital innovation, improved financial management, trade financing and regulatory compliance.

Speaking at the event, the Regional Bank Head, Ikeja, Fidelity Bank Plc, Mr. Jude Monye, who represented the Executive Director, Lagos and South-West, Dr. Ken Opara, described Lagos as a dynamic business hub with immense growth opportunities despite prevailing economic and operational challenges.

According to him, while Lagos remains one of Africa's most vibrant commercial centres, entrepreneurs must navigate rising operating costs, intense competition, shifting consumer preferences, infrastructure limitations and working capital constraints.

“Yes, there are challenges, but that is why we are here, to see how we can guide you, support you and make sure that you bring your dreams to fruition. Building a competitive business in this environment requires more than ambition. It requires reliable products, consistent service, proper records, disciplined cost management, efficient inventory control and a deep understanding of customers,” Monye said.

He further emphasised the role of technology in improving business p by @teeplustee
