Sinners 2025

"You keep dancing with the devil... one day he's gonna follow you home"

Brothers Smoke and Stack return to their hometown in Mississippi for somewhat of a fresh start. They purchase a Juke joint from questionable sources and recruit talented townsfolk to perform.

The night starts off with magic and freedom. Everyone feels alive, fully transfixed into the atmosphere of blues and the culture. Until some uninvited guests ask to perform at the club also.

What follows will have the townsfolk questioning superstition and who to trust...

It's always hard to properly review a film without spoilers, and we all know trailers tend to complete ruin films these days anyway, so I'm not inclined to divulge too much of the plot.

With that being said, this film was far better than anticipated. The visuals were incredible, the music was absolutely spot on, and the acting from everyone was impeccable. How Michael B Jordan managed to seamlessly play two separate people with consistent differences is amazing.

This movie oozes a mish mash of 'Crossroads' and 'Dusk til Dawn' two incredible films that are vastly different, but definitely feel inspiration for the plot.

Apparently, it's a long film, I didn't notice. I was fully immersed in this the entire time. Loved it. Up there for top films this year so far.

No spoiler thoughts on this homies?

Stay Spooky! 🎸

The Rule of Jenny Pen 2025

I was super excited to watch this New Zealand film by director James Ashcroft who made the incredibly bleak but brilliant 'Coming home in the Dark'.

The story follows Stefans' (Geoffrey Rush) sudden departure from being a judge due to having a stroke and his new life in a retirement home.

Stefan has an immediate distaste for fellow retiree Dave Crealy (John Lithgow) due to his absolutely mean attitude and bonkers personality.

Things go from bad to worse in this suspenseful, psychological thriller. It's not an out right horror but the themes at play are certainly horrifying.

It's a story of loss, terror, and vulnerability with fantastic performances from all stars. Big props for nailing the kiwi accent which is no easy feat.

Definitely recommend a watch, if you have seen it let me know your thoughts!

Terrifier 3

A second viewing for this one already from me, I love how the film opens like a classic hallmark family Christmas movie until Santa is spied putting presents under the tree. Less than 5 minutes in, we are met with the hilarity and brutality that is Art the Clown terrorizing a family and enjoying some milk and cookies.

Time jump 5 years to witness Sienna's current mental state after the trauma she endured. An estranged relationship with her and Jonathan, their past still haunts them as they try to rebuild their lives.

Art and nut job Vicky are in a hibernated state until awakened by an unsuspecting demolition crew. This is when the Christmas rampage begins and what a treat it is. From scalping to chainsaw massacres, fan girl moments over the 'real' Santa Claus to blood angels, it is a treat of hilarious viewing.

There are so many iconic funny moments from a character that says nothing but also says everything with his emotive gestures, Art really is one of a kind and an absolute horror treasure.

Loved the film, not as good as much of a fave as Terrifier 2 for me with a few unanswered questions and potentially a weaker storyline, however in the style of film it is not everything needs an answer or a reason. A treat to be had none the least.

What did you think of this one? What was your favourite scene?

Blink Twice 2024

Zoe Kravitz directorial debut is albeit impressive for the all-star cast and execution of the film.

Mixed reviews online regarding this one, some love it and praise the premise and acting, others find it disappointing as a horror film. It's, in my opinion, a psychological thriller and one I really enjoyed at that.

The story follows friends Frida and Jess waitressing a prestigious event for the tech genius Slater King. When they end up chatting and partying with him, he invites them to come to his island retreat to hang out.

A dream come true, private chef, champagne flowing and partying all day and night with celebrities and best of all no phones. What could go wrong, right?

Everyone is having the time of their lives and can't believe they got so lucky, until someone isn't having fun and it all ultimately unravels...

I liked the twists and turns, the pretty set of the film and the way it was shot. The cast was excellent. An eclectic bunch of people that were all perfectly suited to the story. A few questions were left unanswered, but I only hope this is left to the viewer and not because it needs a sequel.

As always, I would love to know your thoughts on this film if you've seen it. No spoilers, please!

Stay Spooky! 🐍
