‘Catch 22’ is opening this Thursday 2nd July 6-9pm at Print House Gallery in dalston 📍Come by for some cold cold free drinks and to see some fresh artwork 🍹🧊🍻💋📍Nicole Di @nicoleedi_ Juan Alejandre @juandely.15 Sofía Serpa Arango @sofia.serpa.arango Teg Dore @tegandore Catch-22 is a show of four recent graduates living and making work in London. It presents work made during eight months of committed practice, enabled by the inaugural Goldsmiths V22 Studio Bursary Award. Working across South East and North East London, the artists have been brought together through a shared experience: one year after graduating from Goldsmiths BFA, Di, Alejandre, Serpa Arango, and Dore are showcasing the fruits of their labour.Catch-22 references the paradoxical labyrinth of entering the art world, which this V22 bursary opportunity has helped them navigate. ‘Clusterfucks’2022-2025don’t cry over melted waxI began growing my body hair out in 2022, having consistently removed it since age 11.1.5 years later, I waxed everything from the neck down. This took 6.5 hrs.Melting the wax in a pot, it is spread down the skin, with the hairs. It hardens to create a strip that can be picked and ripped off. I heat and fuse the shards of used wax into flower fungus forms.They melt and break. They are light and brittle. Careful handelling. They can be warmed in a palm. Low melting point.My friends grew out their hair for months. In the warm lamp light of my room, offering their hair to me, we chatted and shared.These rituals were sacred.We continued to grow our hair. I harvested through waxing, conserving the shards.From the heating in the studio to the warming summer months I had learnt the instability of the shards.Bought an AC unit to prevent the sculptures from melting. Changed my degree show to accommodate said unit. Transported the wax from my house in a freezer bag, I made the sculptures in the space.Four days before the exams began, I went in to sort my lights, and the AC had been turned off.The sculptures had melted.I hadn’t cried in 4 years. I cried. Hard. Kinda cathartic that empty feeling in your chest. All it took was someone pushing a button.The wax melts like plastic. The sculptures collapse, the sharp edges round, the thin shards gloop. The matt imprint of pores and hairs recedes underneath a new forming shiny surface.I left and started my way home, before running back to find that one strip with that little bit of blood and hair and the deep imprint of the pores, the follicles on the ends of dark hairs.I looked upon a skimming stone, smooth, a faint red hint, a line of hair beneath. My mates armpit buried under gloss.I knew they would melt one day; they are wax and soft and brittle. But I wanted to control it. I wanted people to see them. I believe in the material. It holds pores, hairs and stories.The Sisyphean nature of the work is reflected in my struggle with a material that rejects care.So, I waxed another friend, made another Clusterfuck and put it in a fridge… by @tegandore
