Case Study: Wakawaka, Nigeria Uber left Nigeria suddenly, with no warning. Riders were left stranded mid-trip. They also left Uganda around the same time. The exit left a hole in one of Nigeria's key pillars of infrastructure: transportation. As an exercise, we built Wakawaka: not just software as a service, but a holistic solution to Nigeria's transportation problem. The problem. Drivers were paying up to 40% commission to Uber, on top of a daily car rental fee, slashing their earnings significantly. Around the same time, Nigeria removed import duty and VAT on electric vehicles, a policy shift that went largely unnoticed. The solution. Wakawaka is a brand concept modeled to solve the problems the data pointed to: a ride-hailing app built not for profit extraction, but for the driver. - A flat 15% commission. No surge, ever. - Every driver and rider verified through Nigeria's NIN system, so everyone's identity is confirmed and accounted for. - State-government-backed financing, so drivers own the car outright after 8 years instead of renting it for life. - A carpooling feature that cuts emissions and eases rush-hour congestion in cities like Lagos. The idea: a state-backed model that lets a driver build equity in his own vehicle while reducing the carbon and congestion choking Nigeria's biggest cities. Imagine if Nigeria had a ride hailing app built to actually move Nigeria, with state government backing the vehicle financing. Drivers keep 85% of every ride. No surge, ever. Imagine if you just pay 20% upfront, and the drivers get to own their car after 8 years instead of renting it forever. Every driver and rider verified by NIN, so you know exactly who’s in the car. Imagine if this was powered by the state government? This looks like a real launch. It isn’t.
