The psychology behind how we work.
Ambition. Leadership. Blind spots. Decisions.
Get to know yourself differently.

Introducing Telleus.

We’re building Telleus around a simple idea: meaningful guidance should start with understanding the person receiving it.

Because better guidance starts with better understanding.

Ever have one of those moments where you leave a meeting and think, “Why did I do that again?”
You knew better. You’ve probably even promised yourself you’d handle it differently next time. And somehow, there you are again.
That’s the part we’re interested in at Telleus. Not just what you should do differently, but what’s actually happening underneath the reaction in the first place.
Because it’s hard to change a pattern you only notice after it’s already happened.

One of the patterns we see most consistently in career assessments isn’t about capability gaps.

It’s about competence traps.

The person who became the go-to for a certain kind of work — not because they chose it, but because they were good at it once and got rewarded for it. So they did more. Got better. Got rewarded again.

Ten years later, their calendar is full of work they’re excellent at and quietly exhausted by.

The trap isn’t failure. It’s success in the wrong direction.

What makes this hard to see from the inside is that it doesn’t feel like a problem. You’re good at your job. People rely on you. That’s supposed to feel like enough.

The question we keep returning to in the research isn’t “what are you good at?” Almost everyone can answer that.

It’s: which parts of your best work give you energy — and which parts are you merely good at surviving?

Those are very different lists. And for most people, they’ve never been separated.

Herminia Ibarra’s work on career transitions points to something we find useful here: clarity tends to follow action, not precede it. You don’t think your way to a better answer. You run a small experiment and learn from what you notice.

That’s something we’re building toward at Telleus — helping people see these patterns before success hardens them into a career they never consciously chose.

What are you good at that you no longer want to be known for?

We’ve spent a lot of time talking to people who are genuinely self-aware.

They can describe their patterns with real precision. The defensiveness that shows up under pressure. The way their tone changes when someone challenges them publicly. The shutdown that happens in certain conversations.

They know it. Most of them have known it for years.

And then you watch them in a high-stakes room — and it’s gone in thirty seconds.

This is one of the things that shaped how we built Telleus.

Insight isn’t the problem. Most people who’ve done any real development work have plenty of insight.

The gap is timing.

By the time you feel the defensiveness, you’re already behind the pattern. It moved faster than your awareness could.

The work we keep coming back to — the thing that actually changes behavior — is learning to recognize the early signals before the pattern is fully in motion.

That’s a different skill than self-awareness. And almost nothing in the current development landscape is built to teach it.

That’s what we’re building toward.

Ever been in a meeting where everyone agrees… but something still feels off?

Sometimes, the problem isn't a lack of good ideas. It's that nobody wants to question the person in charge.

The most valuable person in the room isn't always the one with the answer. Sometimes, it's the one who asks:

“What are we not seeing?”

That one question can change the entire conversation.

What's a question you wish more leaders would ask?

You probably know what you think.
But do you know why you think that way?

Long before we enter a meeting, make a difficult decision, or disagree with someone, we’ve already developed patterns in how we process information and approach problems.

Dr. Dave Poppel explains why understanding your thinking style can reveal something much deeper than whether you’re simply “analytical” or “creative.”

And once you start noticing your own patterns, you start noticing everyone else’s too.

Have you ever thought about what your thinking style might be?

We don’t all process information the same way.

Some of us gather more data. Some explore new possibilities. Others learn by acting and adjusting.

Inquisitive. Open-minded. Timely.

Three different approaches — and most of us naturally lean toward one.
Which one sounds like you?

What if hypnosis isn’t really about losing control — but about noticing what your mind does when you stop trying to control it?

Tara asked Dr. Dave Poppel about hypnotherapy, and his answer went somewhere we didn’t expect.

Not into the mystical side of hypnosis, but into how the mind processes information, what happens beneath our usual conscious thinking, and what that might reveal about ourselves.

It’s a fascinating way to think about something most of us have probably misunderstood.

Would you try hypnotherapy?

Before we talk about TELLEUS, we should introduce you to one of the people behind it.

Meet Dr. Dave Poppel.

His path has taken him through psychology, leadership, education, and decades of working closely with people and organizations. In this first video, Dave shares a little about where he comes from and the experiences that shaped his work.

You’ll be hearing a lot more from him here.

So, we thought we’d start with the obvious question: Who is Dave?

Six smart people can look at the same problem and see six completely different things.

One looks for evidence. Another wants a process. Someone questions what’s missing. Someone sees a pattern. Someone pushes for action.

None of them are necessarily wrong.

The problem starts when we interpret a different way of thinking as a difficult personality.

Understanding how you think — and how others think differently — can change the way you work together.

What’s your thinking style?

Comment “THINKING STYLE” and we’ll DM you the link to join the TELLEUS waitlist.

We’re pretty good at giving ourselves advice.

Understanding why we keep doing the same thing is harder.

That’s where Telleus starts.

Understand first. Coach second.
