The tide in the San Juans never sits still 🌊

Six spots where the current bends, splits and races between the islands, from Deception Pass (6.7 knots under the bridge) to the corner where Haro Strait meets Juan de Fuca. At every stop, watch the ebb slow to slack and then flood back the other way.

Modelled currents from NOAA's Salish Sea model (SSCOFS) for 12 August 2026, drawn by Telltale.

Which pass have you been flushed through? 👇

Typhoon Champi is heading for Guam 🌀
See how it formed, and @noaa's wind forecast.

A week ago it was a loose cluster of storms near the Marshall Islands. This shows how it formed, from real weather data, and NOAA's forecast of its winds as it reaches the Mariana Islands.

The eye is expected to pass very close to Guam early Sunday morning.

Stay safe, Guam, Rota and Saipan. Follow NWS Guam for official warnings.

💛 The American Red Cross is responding on Guam and in the Northern Marianas. To help, give to Red Cross Disaster Relief at redcross.org, call 1-800-RED CROSS, or text REDCROSS to 90999.

Ever wondered what the wind does around an island? 🌬️

This is two days of trade winds over Fiji (30 Sep to 2 Oct). Viti Levu's mountains, up to 4,344 ft (1,324 m), split the flow and leave a calm shadow that stretches far downwind. In its lee, Nadi airport's wind even turned around and blew from the west.

Sailing Fiji? The lee of the big islands is where the breeze goes soft, and the gaps between them are where it squeezes and builds.

You can’t outrun this. 8 knots of tide chases you one way and then right back 🌊

This is one day of tide in BC’s Gulf Islands, 12 August 2026. Every few hours the Salish Sea squeezes through a handful of narrow passes, runs flat out, stalls at slack, then pours back the other way.

Predicted peaks that day (CHS):
Porlier Pass 8.4 kn
Dodd Narrows 8.2 kn
Gabriola Passage 7.3 kn
Active Pass 5.9 kn, right on the BC Ferries route

Most cruising sailboats motor at 6 to 7 knots. Get the timing wrong and you go backwards, so sailors plan their whole day around a few quiet minutes of slack.

Which pass have you run? Tag the friend who always times it wrong 👇

The tide in the Gulf Islands runs faster than you can paddle, and it changes direction four times a day.

The Strait of Georgia and the channels behind the islands are always trying to level out, and the only way through is a handful of narrow passes.

Dodd Narrows, just south of Nanaimo, floods north at up to 9.5 knots, about 18 km/h. The official sailing directions say to go through only at slack water, the few quiet minutes when the tide turns.

Gabriola Passage runs even harder on the ebb, up to 9 knots. Porlier Pass, between Valdes and Galiano, pours into the Strait at up to 10 knots on the flood.

Active Pass is the busy one: up to 8 knots through a fairway about 370 m wide, shared with the big ferries between Victoria and Vancouver. You can meet three of them in the pass at once. On a strong flood it boils with rips and a big clockwise eddy turns in Miners Bay. On the ebb, the rips disappear.

This was the 12 August spring tide: a new moon, two days after the moon's closest approach, so the tides ran big.

The currents are modelled, not measured. Open water is from the CIOPS-SalishSea model; speeds in each pass follow Canadian Hydrographic Service predictions, and the shapes inside the narrows are illustrative. Not for navigation. Live currents and tides at the link in bio.
