It’s already been nearly a week since I left Sri Lanka and hopped over to Bali. Since then, this fella in the picture crossed my mind a couple of times.

If you’ve spent any time around Ahangama, you’ve probably bumped into him — strolling around, trying to sell his handmade coconut turtles.

Seeing him in this picture for the first time, or knowing him personally:
What’s the first sentence that comes to your mind to describe him?

Not normal? Disabled? Invalid? Retarded?

Since I mainly think in German, the first word that came to my mind was „behindert“ — which roughly translates to “not capable.”

Not capable of what?
Dis-abled? Not able to what?
Or even in-valid? Not valid to be whom? A human…?

Realizing the meaning and weight behind these words made me want to disappear. Especially because I haven’t met anyone in a long time who expresses joy as freely as he does. Raw. Real.

But I could show you hundreds of people, day in and day out, who can’t even look one another in the eyes.
And yet — it’s him we call disabled?

We call someone disabled who basically smiles all day and is a pure expression of joy — While at the same time, we pay $5,000 for a week-long retreat where a self-proclaimed guru tries to breathe life into the dying ember of our happiness.

We call someone invalid who screams “Brotha!” with the biggest smile ever and runs toward you to greet you — While calling someone else successful just because of a job title, even though that person won’t stand up for an older lady on public transport.

We should reframe these words.
He is more human than most of us.

Bless you, brother✨ taken in Ahangama , Sri Lanka by @temosayin

Tomorrow night, 28th Feb - Temo Sayin ( @temosayin ) will be at Behind The Green Door to prove that music doesn’t have to be hectic or overwhelming to induce ecstasy.

His deep, organic sounds invite listeners on a unique journey—melancholic yet never sorrowful, sensitive yet refined, powerful without being chaotic. It’s music that moves the soul as much as the body.

Starting out in Zurich’s underground scene over 10 years ago, he quickly transitioned from underground events to the city’s top clubs & festivals such as Wonderfruit & Arosa, sharing now the decks with some of the biggest names in the industry worldwide.

Watch & learn.

Yesterday, I observed a child playing at the beach. Joyful. Free. Oh gosh, he was so free…

Even after watching this little fella for over 10 minutes, I couldn’t figure out the rules of his game. Running from A to B. Tossing sand in one direction only to grab a shovel and put it back into the bucket. The only two things I managed to figure out were that his imagination must be infinite and that I want to feel that exact same joy.

After a while, his father came over — probably out of confusion — and started explaining his son how he should play. Do this. Do that. This is right. This is wrong. The big smile on that little pumpkin’s face faded more and more into neutral. His expression turned hopeless, as if his sandcastles had just been conquered. Defeated by the full force of advice, he retreated under the umbrella. Game over.

My social media feed is flooded with advice. Do this. Do that. This is right. This is wrong.
(Funny enough, in German, we call advice Ratschlag, which literally translates to «advice punch». Now I know why I feel so beaten up after doomscrolling…). I don’t know if the term «advice economy» exists, but we’re definitely living in one. What used to be flashy billboards is now a quote of the day.

And I wonder: could all this advice be the root of the problem? You know, like a Trojan horse.
What if imagination is our most beautiful and precious gift, and all this advice is stealing it from us? Like that little lovebug’s at the beach. Well-intentioned, yet alienating and destructive—like tequila shot nr.
7.

Perhaps all we need is less advice and more understanding? Fewer answers and more open questions? Less outlook and more insight? Less correction and more connection?

If that’s the case, I want to play my part. Rather telling what to do, I rather want to share the same questions that keeps me awake in the middle of the night. Honest and vulnerable. Bring all those messy thoughts and complicated feelings I usually keep locked far away in my diary to light, to hopefully connect on a level where we all can have fun building sandcastles again. taken in Lembongan, Bali, Indonesia by @temosayin
