Self-professed as the sweeping kind, ๐™˜๐™๐™ช๐™ ๐™ฌ๐™ช๐™ข๐™–๐™– recalls their female relatives in Nigeria complimenting them by saying โ€œoฬฃ na je ozi ka nwanyiฬฃโ€ / โ€œthey do chores like a woman,โ€ meaning they do them well and with pleasure. A traditional Igbo broom, or aziฬฃza, crafted from dried palm tree fronds tightly bound together at the handle, cleverly allowing adjustability to make it narrow enough to reach corners and spread out enough to cover wider swaths of ground, is widely used across Nigeria and viewed as an essential household item representing cleanliness and order. The broom also carries a harder to describe resonance and signifigance which became more evident to me as we were installing and passerby would stop to ask us what we were doing with the brooms, which felt familiar and specific to them. Once satisfied that ๐™˜๐™๐™ช๐™ ๐™ฌ๐™ช๐™ข๐™–๐™– has a personal connection to the object, they would open up to share their familial connection to the broom. This positionality of being loaded with memory and meaning may be what the Artist was referring to when they called the broom a โ€œpersistent object.โ€ As an artist inspired by the persistent object vs the ephemeral dust that is meant to be swept, ๐™˜๐™๐™ช๐™ ๐™ฌ๐™ช๐™ข๐™–๐™– is interested in exploring the reverb that a simple sound takes on, gaining more textures as the sound grows throughout the duration of a sweeping performance. The wind carries massive plumes of mineral-rich dust from the Saharan desert in North Africa and travels thousands of miles across the Atlantic Ocean. The sonic possibilities of dust, an object which itself is amorphous and surrounds us, and the action of gathering dust with a beautifully made tool, creates multiple refracted layers thru which to view journeys, movement, migration and entanglement. * Born in Lagos, Nigeria and raised in Prince Georgeโ€™s County, Maryland, ๐™˜๐™๐™ช๐™ ๐™ฌ๐™ช๐™ข๐™–๐™– makes soft sculptures, techno-divining performances and other media experiments about liminal characters, Igbo trickster myths and non-linear narratives.
