💡 Research Event Spotlight 💡

Our department hosted a grant-writing workshop led by Dr. Steven Belenko and Dr. Brandon del Pozo on September 25. Designed for both faculty members and graduate students, this three-hour workshop provided valuable information about NIH grant opportunities for criminal justice research, the application process, and tips for developing competitive proposals.

Our department is committed to supporting groundbreaking research in the field of criminal justice. Helping our faculty and Ph.D. students identify potential funding opportunities and strengthen their grant-writing skills is an important part of that commitment.

🎉 Please join us in celebrating our Ph.D. student’s achievements!

Mariel Delacruz has been named one of Pennsylvania’s 20 Under 40 Latino Emerging Leaders and received the Cabrini Young Alumni Award! 👏

Mariel has long strived to position herself as an advocate for individuals and communities affected by violence. After completing her undergraduate studies at Cabrini University, she earned an M.A. in Criminal Justice from Rutgers University, where she also co-founded the THE NEW JERSEY INNOCENCE PROJECT, serving and advocating for innocent people incarcerated in the state.

In addition to her Ph.D. work at Temple University Department of Criminal Justice, she serves as an adjunct instructor in Eastern University’s Criminal Justice Program and as Director of the Victim Services Unit at the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office.

We are so proud of our students for making a real-world impact! 🎉

Please read the full interview featured by Temple University College of Liberal Arts to learn more about Mariel and her awards.

Two Rutgers School of Criminal Justice PhD alums have taken on leadership positions in the Criminal Justice department at Temple University.

Dr. Aunshul Rege, PhD '12, started as a software engineer before finding criminology.

She's now Professor and Chair of Temple's Department of Criminal Justice and director of its CARE Lab, with an NSF CAREER award and research featured by BBC World Service and PBS/NPR.

Dr. Amarat Zaatut, PhD '16, recently joined the same department's leadership team as Graduate Chair.

In Rege's words: "We're fortunate to have two Rutgers alumni serving in key leadership roles within the department." taken in Rutgers University—Newark by @temple_cj

While we celebrate this year’s graduates, we're looking back at what our alumni have built since leaving Rutgers SCJ.

Dr. Amarat Zaatut earned her PhD from our program on a Fulbright Fellowship. Today, she's an Associate Professor at Temple University, where her ethnographic research on Arab immigrant communities is reshaping how we understand integration, identity, and the immigration-crime nexus.

She recently received a Russell Sage Foundation grant to study Muslim immigrants' integration experiences across traditional and non-traditional destinations in the U.S.

Her story is a reminder of what a Rutgers SCJ education can launch.
