Noach spent an entire year keeping these animals alive—just to sacrifice them the moment he stepped off the Ark.

Why? 👇

Because surviving is only step one. The Ark protected life, but the Mizbeach gave that life a higher purpose.

Thousands of years later, the Mizbeach in the Beit HaMikdash stood on that exact same spot, carrying the exact same message: life isn't just about making it through the storm—it’s about what you dedicate it to.

Where in your life are you stuck in "survival mode"—and how do you turn it into purpose? Drop your thoughts below.

Mikdash Monday – The Mikdash (Holy Temple) in Tanach - October 12, 2026
The Mikdash is not mentioned many times explicitly in the Torah and seldom in the Prophets and Writings. However, we do find it mentioned many times, in subtle ways, under different terms.
In this series, we will be exploring all the ways the Holy Temple makes an appearance.
Rashi, the 11th century commentator, will be used to deepen our understanding of each verse.

HAFTARAH FOR SHABBAT PARASHAT BERESHIT

When Shabbat is immediately followed by Rosh Chodesh, the following haftarah is read:

Samuel I 20:18-42

"And Yonatan said to him, "Tomorrow is the new moon, and you will be remembered, for your seat will be vacant. And for three days, you shall hide very well, and you shall come to the place where you hid on the day of work, and you shall stay beside the traveler's stone. And I shall shoot three arrows to the side, as though I shot at a mark. And behold, I shall send the youth, saying, 'Go, find the arrows.' If I say to the youth, 'Behold, the arrows are on this side of you,' take it and come, for it is well with you, and there is nothing the matter, as HaShem lives. But, if I say thus to the youth, 'Behold, the arrows are beyond you,' go! For HaShem has sent you away. And concerning the matter which we have spoken, I and you, behold, HaShem is between me and you forever." And David hid in the field, and when it was the new moon, Saul sat down to the meal to eat. And the king sat upon his seat, as at other times, upon the seat by the wall, and Yonatan arose, and Avner sat down beside Saul, and David's place was vacant. And Saul did not say anything on that day, for he thought, "It is an incident; he is not clean, for he is not clean." And it was, on the morrow of the new moon, the second day of the month, that David's place was vacant, and Saul said to Yonatan, his son, "Why has not the son of Yishai come to the meal either yesterday or today?" And Yonatan answered Saul, "David asked leave of me to go to Bethlehem. And he said, 'Let me go away now, for we have a family sacrifice in the city, and he, my brother, commanded me, and now, if I have found favor in your eyes, let me slip away now, and see my brothers. ' He, therefore, did not come to the king's table." And Saul's wrath was kindled against Yonatan, and he said to him, "You son of a straying woman deserving of punishment! Did I not know that you choose the son of Yishai, to your shame and to the shame of your mother's nakedness? For all the days that the son of Yishai is living on the earth, you and your kingdom will not be established..." by @templeinstitute

SEVEN HIDDEN PRE-CREATION CREATIONS

Ancient Midrash teaches that seven things were created before the creation of the world. They were, (1) The Torah, (which served G-d as the blueprint of creation); (2) Teshuva (repentance) without which humanity would be doomed; (3) Gan Eden (the Garden of Eden), the ultimate reward for the righteous; (4) Gehinnom, where souls undergo spiritual refinement after death; (5) Kisei HaKavod (the Throne of Glory) G-d's sovereignty over and presence in creation; (6) Bet HaMikdash (the Holy Temple) the place of HaShem's presence on earth and the focal point connecting heaven and earth; (7) Shem HaMashiach (the Name of the Messiah). The fulfillment of redemption was known from the start.

All seven pre-creation realities are essential elements of creation, without which creation could not have happened. by @templeinstitute

THEY WILL TELL US, “YOU ARE ROBBERS”

On the very first verse of the holy Torah, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth," the 11th century Torah commentator, Rashi shared the following:

"Said Rabbi Yitzchak: It was not necessary to begin the Torah except from 'This month is to you,' (Exod. 12:2) which is the first commandment that the Israelites were commanded, (for the main purpose of the Torah is its commandments, and although several commandments are found in Genesis, e.g., circumcision and the prohibition of eating the thigh sinew, they could have been included together with the other commandments). Now for what reason did He commence with 'In the beginning?' Because of [the verse] 'The strength of His works He related to His people, to give them the inheritance of the nations' (Ps. 111:6). For if the nations of the world should say to Israel, 'You are robbers, for you conquered by force the lands of the seven nations [of Canaan],' they will reply, 'The entire earth belongs to the Holy One, blessed be He; He created it (this we learn from the story of the Creation) and gave it to whomever He deemed proper When He wished, He gave it to them, and when He wished, He took it away from them and gave it to us.'"

1000 years ago, living in Troyes, France, Rashi, (Rabbi Shlomo Yitzhaki), anticipated what would happen, 1000 years after his death, when HaShem would return the children of Israel to our land. They call us murderers and theives, guilty of apartheid and genocide, of causing far away earthquakes and riots and rampaging in foreign lands. But Israel is none of those things. We are simply taking back what is ours, what was first promised to Avraham and to Yitzchak and to Yaakov. What was conquered and earned by Yehoshua and the children of Israel. Israel is here to stay! by @templeinstitute

THIS WEEK: SHABBAT BERESHIT

"Now the heavens and the earth were completed and all their host. And G-d completed on the seventh day His work that He did, and He abstained on the seventh day from all His work that He did. And G-d blessed the seventh day and He hallowed it, for thereon He abstained from all His work that G-d created to do." (Genesis 2:1-3)

Immediately upon creation of our world in six days, G-d took the seventh day off. Creation was over. All work ceased. G-d's spirit was at rest. The Torah's account of G-d's creation of all existence in six days is profound. The introduction of the seventh day of rest - the Shabbat - is something else altogether. While not adding even a speck of dust to creation, the Shabbat changed every aspect of creation. With rest there is renewal. With rest there is return. The very word Shabbat announces these things: leshevet is to be in repose. Lashuv is to return.

This first Shabbat is known as Shabbat Bereshit - the Shabbat of creation. Unlike every other festive day on the Hebrew calendar, Shabbat is not determined by the appearance of the new moon. Its arrival is not determined by man's testimony, but by G-d's. It is Shabbat, not because it follows yom hashishi (day six - Friday), or because it precedes yom harishon (the first day - Sunday), but simply because it is Shabbat. Despite its frequency, (over fifty times a solar year), it is the single most holy day designated by Torah. On Shabbat we are to emulate G-d, who rested on the seventh day. That rest includes, by definition, three full meals, prayer, song, and pleasure. The rest of Shabbat is not passive.

Shabbat Bereshit, the Shabbat of creation remained just that until G-d etched onto the two tablets of Torah which Moshe brought down from Sinai, the commandment to keep and to remember the Shabbat, the third of the Ten Commandments.

On Friday night when we sanctify Shabbat with our Kiddush wine, we stand, as witnesses are required, and give testimony to the fact that G-d created the world. We weren't there when it happened, but G-d's word that it happened is all the proof we need to possess.

GARMENTS OF THE KOHANIM: THE EPHOD OF THE LEVITES & THE PROPHETS

Maimonides, Mishneh Torah, Hilchot Klei HaMikdash, 10:13:

"The statements found in the words of the prophets that the kohanim would wear an ephod of linen does not mean that they were Kohanei Gadol (High Priests). For the Kohen Gadol's ephod was not of linen [alone]. For the Levites would also wear such a garment, for the prophet Samuel was a Levite, and [I Samuel 2:18] describes him as "a youth, girded with a linen ephod." Instead, this ephod was worn by the students of the prophets and those who were fit to have the Holy Spirit rest upon them to make it known that such a person reached a rung equivalent to that of the Kohen Gadol who speaks with the Holy Spirit via the medium of the ephod and the breastplate."

"Blessed be the Merciful One Who grants assistance."

THIS WEEK: PARASHAT BERESHIT - "IN THE BEGINNING"

"In the beginning G-d created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was astonishingly empty and void, and darkness was on the face of the deep, and the spirit of G-d was hovering over the face of the water. And G-d said, "Let there be light," and there was light." (Genesis 1:1-3)

So begins the Torah's account of all that exists being created by a single G-d, a revolutionary, (or, perhaps, revelationary), idea in antiquity. G-d creates our world out of nothing, simply by the command of His voice: "Let there be..." bringing all reality into existence. By calling into existence and separating, by naming and designating, in six primordial days G-d brings into existence the world in which we live. G-d's final act of creation before resting on the seventh day was man, the crown, (and soon to be revealed, the thorn) of His creation.

It is important to note that in the original Hebrew, "Bereshit bara Elokim," which is traditionally translated as "In the beginning G-d created," grammatically should be understood as, "In the beginning of… G-d created" as if a defining word has been left out, simply adding to the mystery and splendor of creation. by @templeinstitute

WATCHING THE SMOKE RISE AT THE END OF SHEMINI ATZERET

This painting depicts that which is written in the Talmud (Yoma 21b) regarding the final Shemini Atzeret offering: “At the conclusion of the final day of Sukkot (Shemini Atzeret), everyone would look towards the smoke emanating from the sacrifices burning on the altar. If the smoke wafted northward, the poor (on the right) would be happy, while the land-owners (on the left) would be sad – because it meant that the rains of the coming year would be plentiful and the fruits would rot. But if the smoke blew to the south, the farmers would rejoice, while the poor would be saddened, because it meant that rain would be sparse and the fruits would be better preserved. If the smoke went eastward, everyone would be happy, while if to the west, all would be sad.” by @templeinstitute
