Thank you to Dr. Lucinda Maine, CEO Emeritus of AACP, for presenting the 2026 Bender Lecture today. Her presentation, “Lessons from Our Foremothers,” featured incredible details and advice from some of the leading figures in American pharmacy and healthcare history.

And thank you to all of the students, staff, and faculty (only a few who are pictured here!) who came out for a midday deep dive into the pharmacy archives.

What if researchers could watch Alzheimer's disease unfold inside living human neurons, in real time?

That's the goal of a new project led by Oscar Perez-Leal, MD, at Temple University School of Pharmacy, supported by a two-year, R21 grant from the NIH's National Institute on Aging.

Early-onset Alzheimer's strikes before age 65, and there are still no treatments that change the course of the disease. Dr. Perez-Leal's lab will use its own multiplex CRISPR gene-editing technology to build the first comprehensive live-cell models of the disease, tracking several damage pathways at once. The models will then be used to test compounds that go beyond amyloid, the focus of most current research.

Professor Emeritus Salim Merali and TUSP collaborators Carlos Barrero, George Morton, and Wayne Childers, have developed VTX-31, a new approach that aims to tackle insulin resistance at its source, and it's now moving toward clinical development with Temple spinout Valhalla Therapeutics.

Their research discovered that damage to a protein called GLUT4 plays a key role in how insulin resistance develops and VTX-31 is designed to protect it, potentially revolutionizing the way we treat diabetes.

This work began in the lab of a researcher who wanted to make a difference for patients, and it was championed early on by the former dean Peter Doukas. We couldn't be prouder.

Welcome to the profession, Class of 2030!

On September 18, our newest PharmD students received their white coats, a time-honored tradition that signals the beginning of their pharmacy school journey.

A huge thank you to our keynote speaker John Colaizzi of @walgreens , who also visited campus the day before to talk with our PY2s and PY3s about the future of pharmacy.

Thank you to Aisha Alkilani, PY4 class president who provided the Upperclassman Welcome; Marvin Samson, who cloaked our very first cohort of Samson Scholars; and to all of our wonderful cloakers, faculty, and staff for making this moment so meaningful.
