Probably on tour somewhere wishing I had my camera.

A night spent remembering an old friend. You’d have loved this mate. by @templopolis
This is a composite. I’ve always made a point of never posting composites but sometimes I make them for my own purposes. Today I’m making an exception. • This has been my phone background since we visited Sycamore Gap last year and I really wanted to come back to get this shot for real sometime. • Not many things can force me out of hibernation while I focus on music but this is one. Senseless. RIP Sycamore Gap tree. by @templopolis
Almost a year since I was in Iceland, battling high winds and trying to keep sand out of my equipment at Stokksnes. I'm still finding black sand in my coat pockets to this day. by @templopolis
“Window Through Time” Glacial ice broken apart and washed up on Diamond Beach, revealing some fascinating hexagonal and pentagonal patterns. You have to wonder how long those little air bubbles must have been trapped inside before they are finally released as the ice melts away. by @templopolis
Sligachan. What is it about this place? When I first tried to photograph this spot back in 2017, I was caught off-guard by absolutely insane light at sunset after a whole day of miserable weather. I wasn’t at all prepared for it and I desperately scrambled around trying to set up a decent composition, ultimately ending up with some not-that-great shots of an otherwise amazing moment. Fast forward almost exactly five years to March 2022 and where should I find myself but in the very same spot with almost exactly the same conditions. Only this time I was a little more experienced and a little wiser to what I should expect. Or so I thought until I was pelted by hailstones moments after I took this photograph. You live and learn. by @templopolis
This image for me marks the turning point in our Iceland trip. It was day three and despite visiting some incredible locations, I hadn’t taken a single photo that I was excited about. The weather had been challenging but above all I had been out of practice for too long and it was showing. As we looked for a location to visit near Vík, we came across Dyrhólaey lighthouse which promised epic views across the famous “endless” black beach as well as interesting rock formations and natural arches in the opposite direction. Perfect, we thought. This image is not of that place. We arrived to find the road closed due to snow and ice. Typical. Things seemed to be going the same way they had the previous two days. But some hasty google maps replanning showed that Arnardrangur was right around the corner; a huge, isolated rock standing on the western edge of Reynisfjara beach with the iconic Reynisdrangar sea stacks visible way off in the distance. High up on the cliffs, completely exposed the North Atlantic elements, the wind was biblical. But with a view like this, even adverse weather conditions were having a hard time putting a dampener on the photographic opportunities. At last, I felt I had come away with a keeper. by @templopolis
At last, we made it back to the Isle of Skye. Yet another long-delayed trip that was planned for 2020 but fell victim to the global you-know-what. As you can see in this photo of The Needle, a majestic 120ft pinnacle overlooking the Trotternish peninsula, there is a well-defined footpath to its right and a sketchy-looking scree covered hillside to its left. My early morning brain, running solely on instant coffee, a berocca and childlike enthusiasm decided that the left path “didn’t look too bad” and would “definitely be the quickest and most direct way up”. Around half way up, I realised that this probably wasn’t the best decision for anyone other than the local sheep, and certainly not a half-awake dimwit with several kilograms of camera equipment on his back. Nevertheless somehow, out of sheer dumb luck, I made it to the top and was just about set up around sixty seconds before the light hit the Needle. What is the moral of this story? Plan well and leave ample time to avoid ending up in a pickle such as this? That even a complete idiot can be successful through perseverance? Don’t ever ask me for directions? Who knows, but it’s yet another cautionary tale to add to my photography misadventures. by @templopolis
Diamond Beach is one of those locations that’s become an absolute cliche to photograph but at the same time because these chunks of glacial ice are so temporary, every image is totally unique. With that in mind, it’s a location that I was very keen to visit while in Iceland. I’d also imagined it to be a place where you could pretty much rock up, whack the tripod down in front of a majestic piece of ice and fire off awesome shots with zero effort. Maybe that’s the case in calmer conditions but the waves here were far more ferocious than I expected. It is NOT easy to photograph a chunk of ice that weighs as much as a small car when the sea is casually picking it up and throwing it around in front of you! Despite all that, this had to be one of my favourite locations from the short time we spent there, and I could have easily spent all day just wandering around looking for the perfect piece of ice to photograph. by @templopolis
The Old Man of Storr, taken in 2017 and the only one of my own images that I have hanging on my wall at home. I've so many good memories attached to the Isle of Skye so it was a pleasure to spend a few days there this week. by @templopolis
If you’d asked me ahead of the trip to Iceland what my best case scenario might be, I’d have probably told you that it would have to be catching the aurora over Vestrahorn, one of Iceland’s most famous and almost obscenely photographic mountains. Did I think it would actually happen? With our stormy and unsettled forecast, almost certainly not. But after chasing the “Green Lady” all week and seeing little more than brief glimmers through gaps in the clouds, we found ourselves looking at a forecast that predicted just that scenario. We had already visited Stokksnes at both sunset the previous day and sunrise that morning and were faced with 40-50mph winds on both occasions. The black sand was being blown with such relentless force that it was hard to keep your eyes open, let alone take a photo. That experience only made our arrival this calm and clear night feel all the more serene as we walked among the dunes, looking for a composition. So then we set up and waited. Hours passed without any significant activity, but we knew from experience that things could change in an instant. We had spread out among the dunes so there wasn’t much conversation, and I had set my camera to take a time-lapse, partly because I didn’t want to miss anything, but also because it allowed me to sit back and just watch. Around two hours in, I thought I could see something brighter than normal against the night sky, just out to sea. I didn’t get too excited, when you’re sat around staring at the night sky for that long, waiting for something to happen, it doesn’t take much to play tricks on your brain. I looked at the camera screen for confirmation, and there it was, a swirl of green, the best I’d seen all week. I broke the silence and called out to the group, who had just seen the same thing. Suddenly the atmosphere on the quiet beach turned to jubilation, cries and shouts came from the darkness all around me, our efforts had finally been rewarded. by @templopolis
The best part of three years in the making, twice postponed, and until a few weeks ago I didn’t think I’d even be able to join the trip at all, but at long last everything came together and we finally made it to Iceland. It’s been a long time since I’ve used my camera “properly”. Throughout the pandemic it’s been gathering dust on my studio shelf. I’d shifted my focus almost entirely to music and playing the guitar. I’d even started using past-tense language when I’d tell new friends about how I “used to” do a lot of landscape photography. I began to wonder if I’d still fit in with the group of passionate photographers that I’d be travelling with, or if I’d even remember how to shoot the way I used to. I needn’t have worried. The fresh scenery of my first visit to Iceland served up inspiration that was impossible to resist and the group’s caffeine-fuelled enthusiasm for capturing the best of it was infectious. I’m eternally grateful to the guys Matt, Paul, Andy, Max, Darren, Bob and Dave for organising this whole thing and still letting me jump back in at the last minute. From chasing the aurora all night to battling high winds in the volcanic sand (which bricked two of our camera bodies), these guys were determined to make every minute out there count. About the image: This was taken at Svínafellsjökull glacier on our second visit. Arriving in a rare moment of calm conditions, I took the opportunity to send the drone up to get some shots right over the glacier’s terminus. There had been some rainfall since our last visit, which had washed off much of the snow on the glacier to reveal the incredible blues of the ice. Even better than this, the rain had made the hike a challenging one as it had created deep slush puddles as well as treacherous ice sections. Not much of a problem with a pair of good boots and a set of crampons, but it was enough to put the tourists off and we arrived to find we had the entire location to ourselves. by @templopolis
A few misty days last week gave me a little bit of inspiration to dust off the camera and head to a local forest. Finding a good woodland composition is not something that comes easily to me and it really wasn't a great show of atmospheric mist so I wasn't hugely hopeful of coming home with any images. But after an hour or so of half-heartedly ambling around I found myself drawn to the shape of this sapling from the moment I spotted it. There were others nearby with similarly striking colours but this one really had some extra elegance about it. For bonus points, spot the pair of blackbirds hanging out in the background! by @templopolis
