On egin ! Bathed in the sea air of the Bay of Biscay, Etxe Nami lives up to its name: “the house of the wave.” In the kitchen, chef Kanako Makino draws on everything the Basque Country has to offer, from Landes pork and duck to shellfish, rockfish, vegetables and wild herbs. She turns these local ingredients into dishes that are as satisfying to the heart as they are to the palate. Together with LĂ©na Balacco, she makes an inseparable team, delighting diners from near and far and reminding us, once again, that good food knows no borders. /Pre-orders closed/ What do a matcha bowl, a brightly colored kendama, and a patched-up old indigo blanket have in common? They all belong to Japan’s folk crafts. Long overlooked, these ordinary, anonymous objects enjoyed a revival of interest throughout the 20th century, driven in particular by Mingei, the folk art movement. Today, they have become inseparable from Japan’s image abroad. As our capitalist societies slide into crisis, as overconsumption pushes the planet to its limits, and as artificial intelligence promises to digitize every last aspect of our daily lives, what does this fascination with handmade, unpretentious, almost mundane objects say about us? Find out in this brand-new issue, which will make you look at the objects around you in a whole new way! #teempuramag #objectsofjapan #japan #mingei by @tempuramag
“Some campers travel with an impressive amount of gear, as if they were taking their entire house with them. Seeking too much comfort may be a typically Japanese fault.” From tents spread on lawns to designer sites shared on Instagram, Japan’s relationship to camping has changed profoundly over the years. Buoyed by social media, an outdoor gear industry with no shortage of creativity, and the development of glamping, the outdoors has come to be defined through the lens of comfort, safety, and shared experiences. And yet, as nature is shaped into an ordered and reassuring space, the increase in bear attacks is a reminder that the outdoors can never truly be tamed. In her light-filled studio, ceramicist Mami Kanno plays with clay, bringing to life the landscapes that inhabit her dreams. Between marathons, the former art journalist turns vases in the colours of cherry blossoms, beautifully imperfect plates, and objects whose meaning and purpose are left open to interpretation, whether they end up in the hands of a Michelin-starred chef or simply someone who appreciates beautiful things. > Watch this new episode in full on YouTube (link in bio). » In Saitama, a northern suburb of Tokyo, the Turkish community has been made the scapegoat for Japan’s right-wing nationalists, making it difficult for members to integrate and exercise their rights. “They say we don’t pay taxes. Do they think the government is full of idiots? I employ thirty people! We’re not from here.
