“We don’t have to live like this”

Our ‘Unpacked’ podcast series has challenged narratives around race, young people and violence, asking us to put the welfare of children and young people at the centre, and question how we can truly protect them.

In the final episode, @richiebrave sits down with @temwani.world, founder of @4frontproject and @harmtohealinguk, as well as Runnymede’s CEO Dr @shabnabegum25, to ask what safety actually looks like, and how we can get there.

We came together as a community to remember Chris Kaba, stand with his family and show that four years on, we have not forgotten! We exposed what the recent changes to police accountability mean for all of us and how we fight back against police impunity, together.

THANK YOU to everyone who showed up, spoke, performed, volunteered, supported and brought someone with you. We held each other, we honoured Chris and we strengthened our collective commitment to keep fighting for justice. This is what community looks like.

When the government changes the law to make it harder to hold police accountable our response must be collective. We organise. We mobilise. We keep fighting for justice. JOIN US ‼️🖤

Rest in power, Chris Kaba. 🕊️

In this commentary, @temwani.world says.. "It’s time we put police accountability on trial instead of Chris Kaba"

Four years after Chris Kaba’s death, unanswered questions over a discontinued misconduct case raise wider concerns about how police officers are held to account..

THE POLICE KILLED CHRIS. THEN THEY PUT HIM ON TRIAL.

In the court of public opinion, his past became the story - even though police didn’t know who Chris was when they stopped him that night. Officer Martyn Blake shot Chris in the head in 12 seconds.

While Chris’s family & friends were grieving an unimaginable loss, the media & public picked him apart. Race was strategically pushed off the agenda. While everyone was distracted, the police were fighting for to make sure it would become almost impossible to ever hold them to account again ‼️

And it worked - the Government changed the law on police accountability. This impacts all of us.

This Saturday 5 Sep, we turn the focus back. IT’S TIME TO PUT POLICE IMPUNITY ON TRIAL.

Join us to learn what this law change means for you and your family. And stand with a family that should never have to carry this alone.

7 years ago today, our brother Jahiem had his life tragically cut short. On 22 October 2020, Jahiem’s birthday - 4FRONT opened Jahiem’s Justice Centre, the UK’s first Community Justice Centre.

For five years, the Centre stood in the heart of Grahame Park Estate as a living commitment to another kind of justice: a place for our community to heal, organise, resist, build power and imagine something beyond policing, punishment and prisons.

As 4FRONT enters its final chapter, Jahiem’s Justice Centre has now closed its doors. We gathered for one final, intimate moment - to honour Jahiem, everything the Centre held, and the legacy we built together, as his sign came down.

Thank you to our entire 4FRONT community who made the JJC a collective home. Rest in Power, our dear Jahiem 🖤 May more community justice be birthed in your name.

We filmed this final moment so it could be witnessed and remembered. Watch us reflect on the journey and say goodbye to a space that changed so many of our lives - on YouTube.

COMMENT “JAHIEM” & WE WILL DM YOU THE LINK.

We do not have the death penalty - and police are not judge, jury and executioner. If you refuse a society where police can take a life without accountability, join us this Saturday 5 September at Lambeth Town Hall ‼️

Chris committed no crime when he was killed by police. The officers did not know Chris was driving. Martyn Blake did not know who he was or anything about his past when he shot him in the head.

The smear campaign against Chris has tried to distract from what happened that night: an unarmed Black man was shot in the head by police within 12 seconds, while the car was stationary and his hands were visibly raised.

Whatever Chris had or hadn’t done before that night was not a factor in why the police killed him. This country does not have the death penalty. Nothing in Chris’s past gave the police the right to kill him.

We refuse a society where police can shoot an unarmed person and then use the label of “criminal” to justify their death afterwards.

Racism shapes policing in Britain - and pretending otherwise will not make racism disappear!

Tonight’s Sky documentary takes us inside the Met Police firearms unit that killed Chris Kaba. Commissioner Mark Rowley still refuses to admit the Met is institutionally racist, despite Baroness Casey finding racism rife across the force, including serious concerns within MO19 - the firearms unit Martyn Blake was part of when he shot Chris in the head.

Race was not part of the CPS prosecution against Blake. But the CPS is another state institution operating within the same racist society. One arm of the state deciding not to put race on trial cannot be used by another to declare race irrelevant.

The police did not know Chris was driving the car - or anything about his past. They did not know who was behind the wheel. Blake described what he saw: a “Black male” who looked “young and athletic”.

The idea that race plays no role in policing is ridiculous - and Commissioner Mark Rowley surely knows how ridiculous it sounds.

We will not allow race to be written out of what happened to Chris. We will not accept even less accountability for police.

On 5 September, join us at Lambeth Town Hall. The fight for justice is not over.
