He’s been hauling cattle since he was 10 years old riding along. Says it’s the last of real trucking — closer to what the job looked like in the 80s than anything else out here.

$4.75 to $6.25 a mile. About 6,000 miles a week. Best week this truck ever did was around $24,000, roughly three months ago.

What he loves about it? The animals, and the cowboys.

Driver parked in the center lane, got out, and walked into McDonald’s to order.

Doesn’t bother me. Man’s gotta eat, and there’s nowhere to put 80,000 pounds at a fast food place.

21 years. Never had an at-fault accident. His secret? The little green book, the trucker’s bible. It has the regs and the interpretations, so it’s not left up to the officer on the side of the highway in the middle of the night. Know your laws. Cover your rear.

He says skip the major companies. They’ll offer 45 to 50 cents a mile, limit your miles, and play you on pay. His advice: go with a small owner operator who pays a percentage, and talk to the old heads before you sign anything.

Local fuel drivers pulling around $100K to $110K on 50 to 60 hours a week, and home every night. OTR fuel pays more, but you’re never home. He hauls DEF straight from the rail yard and says it’s easy work and good money.

His advice: find a local job and get into fuel.

He used to train new drivers and told every student the same thing: the load can be rescheduled, your life can’t. If you’re speeding to get there, you’re already late.

No load is worth your freedom or anybody else’s life. If the shipper wanted it that bad, they should have ordered it last week.

Super singles. Companies say they save weight and help fuel economy, so you can haul more. He says they ride better too.

His biggest complaint: if one blows, he’s dead in the water on the side of the highway. No second tire to limp in on.
