They Didn’t Start a Business to Get Rich… They Did It for Their Kids What if the goal of starting a business wasn’t just to make more money, but to create more freedom for your family? In this episode of The New York Business Podcast, Susan Kennedy, co-owner of Tend Coffee, shares how she and her husband began their entrepreneurial journey with a very specific goal: to build a business that would allow them to prioritize their children and family life. After getting married, Susan left her corporate job while her husband continued working as a chef, often six days a week. Together, they launched a chocolate company in 2005, working nights, weekends, and whatever spare hours they could find to get the business off the ground. Their plan was to create enough flexibility that when they started a family, one parent could stay home with the children while the other continued working. As opportunities changed, they adapted, supporting each other’s careers and taking turns prioritizing whichever opportunity made the most financial sense. Eventually, their chocolate business led them into coffee roasting and the creation of Tend Coffee. The business lesson? Success isn’t always measured by revenue, employees, or how quickly you can expand. Sometimes it’s measured by whether your business allows you to live the life you originally set out to create. Building a business around your family doesn’t necessarily mean working fewer hours, especially in the beginning. But having a clear purpose behind the hard work can help guide the sacrifices, decisions, and opportunities along the way. 🎙️ Watch the full conversation with Susan Kennedy of Tend Coffee on The New York Business Podcast! #TheNewYorkBusinessPodcast #TendCoffee #SusanKennedy #FamilyFirst #FamilyBusiness by @tendcoffee

What REALLY Happens to Your Money When You Shop Local? Buying local isn’t just about supporting a small business. It’s about strengthening the entire community around you. In this episode of The New York Business Podcast, Susan Kennedy, co-owner of Tend Coffee, shares an interesting perspective on what actually happens to your money when you choose a locally owned business over a national chain. When you buy from a local business, that money helps pay local employees, support nearby suppliers, and provide income for business owners who live, shop, and raise their families in the same community. That money has the opportunity to circulate throughout the local economy, supporting other businesses and creating opportunities for growth. Compare that to a national chain, where a portion of the revenue may leave the community through corporate profits, executive salaries, and operations based elsewhere. One of the biggest takeaways? A thriving local economy depends on more than just customers. It depends on businesses supporting businesses. Susan also shares why she’s passionate about keeping Tend Coffee rooted in Long Island and how local businesses can contribute to the economic health of their neighborhoods. As entrepreneurs, we often focus on growing our own companies, but there’s something powerful about recognizing that our purchasing decisions can help other businesses grow, too. 🎙️ Watch the full conversation with Susan Kennedy of Tend Coffee on The New York Business Podcast! #TheNewYorkBusinessPodcast #TendCoffee #SusanKennedy #ShopLocal #SupportSmallBusiness by @tendcoffee
They Started a Chocolate Business… Then Coffee Changed Everything! ☕ Every successful business has a story, and sometimes the business you start isn’t the one you end up building. Susan Kennedy and her husband began their entrepreneurial journey in 2005 as chocolatiers, eventually earning national recognition and even being featured in Martha Stewart magazine. But when they couldn’t find the right coffee to pair with their chocolates, they decided to roast their own. That decision changed everything. In 2011, they launched what would become Tend Coffee, a certified-organic coffee roasting business on Long Island. Their journey wasn’t without challenges. From navigating the 2008 financial crisis to convincing farmers markets to allow them to sell coffee, Susan and her husband had to get creative, adapt, and continuously find new opportunities. What started with roasting coffee at home eventually grew into a business with its own café, roasting facility, wholesale accounts, and online customers. But one of the biggest lessons from Susan’s story isn’t necessarily about coffee. It’s about recognizing when an opportunity is pulling you in a new direction and having the courage to follow it. Sometimes the most successful entrepreneurs aren’t the ones who stick rigidly to their original plans. They’re the ones willing to pivot, listen to their customers, and build something they’re genuinely passionate about. 🎙️ Catch the full conversation with Susan Kennedy of Tend Coffee on The New York Business Podcast! #TheNewYorkBusinessPodcast #TendCoffee #SusanKennedy #Entrepreneurship #BusinessJourney by @tendcoffee
