24 June 2026 – Reception with His Majesty King Charles III, St James’s Palace

Today, I had the honour of attending His Majesty’s reception on accelerating solutions for methane and non-CO₂ pollutants at St James’s Palace.

I had the opportunity to briefly greet and shake hands with His Majesty. I warmly thanked him for his fondness for Nigerian jollof rice, which brought a smile and added a personal touch to our exchange. I also shared Nigeria’s pleasure in signing up to the Methane Declaration announced today and reaffirmed our commitment to advancing methane action, particularly in my capacity as Nigeria’s Global Methane Champion.

It was a proud moment to represent Nigeria and to see methane reduction receiving such high-level global attention. The reception reinforced the importance of international collaboration and practical solutions in addressing short-lived climate pollutants.

As Nigeria’s Global Methane Champion and Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change, it was especially meaningful to witness the growing momentum behind methane action and to contribute to the global conversation on practical, near-term climate solutions.

Nigeria is positioning itself to become West Africa's hub for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and high-integrity carbon markets.

At the High-Level Meeting on the Implementation of Sustainable Aviation Fuel in Nigeria, the Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), Dr. Omotenioye Majekodunmi, LLM, BL, DPP HC, joined the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, the Director-General of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), H.E. Gautier Mignot, Ambassador of the European Union to Nigeria and ECOWAS, alongside representatives of ICAO, EASA, government institutions, development partners and industry leaders to advance Nigeria's sustainable aviation agenda.

The Director-General underscored that Sustainable Aviation Fuel is rapidly becoming the currency of a decarbonised aviation sector, offering Nigeria a strategic opportunity to attract green investment, strengthen energy security, diversify the economy and create quality jobs in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda.

As Nigeria's apex climate institution and Designated National Authority for carbon markets, the NCCC is strengthening the governance and integrity needed to support CORSIA, mobilise climate finance and build investor confidence.

"Our ambition should not simply be to consume Sustainable Aviation Fuel. Our ambition should be to produce it, certify it, finance it and ultimately export it." — Dr. Tenioye Majekodunmi.

Together, Nigeria is building a credible, investable and internationally recognised Sustainable Aviation Fuel ecosystem for a cleaner, more competitive and prosperous future.

From policy to people-centered action.

The Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), Dr. (Mrs.) Tenioye Majekodunmi, LLM, BL, DPP HC, joined the Honourable Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi; the Country Director of the International Labour Organization (ILO), Dr. Vanessa Phala-Moyo; the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Dr. Kamil A. Shoretire; representatives of the French Government, and other distinguished stakeholders at the official launch of Phase II of the Social Dimension of Ecological Transition Project.

Delivering the keynote address, the DG emphasized the need to transition from climate policy design to grassroots implementation. Drawing on the outcomes of UNFCCC SB64, she reaffirmed the NCCC's commitment to strengthening its partnership with the ILO and the Government of France through 2029 to advance the Renewed Hope Agenda and foster inclusive green growth.

This new phase will support the implementation of Nigeria's Just Transition Guidelines and Action Plan (JT-GAP), strengthen clean energy value chains, promote economic diversification, and expand opportunities for workers, women, youth, and persons with disabilities (PWDs), while accelerating the delivery of Nigeria's NDC 3.0 commitments.

NCCC and ICAT Advance Nigeria's Climate Transparency Through Landmark ICAT Phase II Outputs

The National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), in collaboration with the Initiative for Climate Action Transparency (ICAT), convened the Final Validation and Close-out Workshop of the ICAT Nigeria Phase II Project on the Set-up of Sectoral Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV) Systems.

In her keynote address, the Director-General of the NCCC, Dr. Tenioye Majekodunmi, LLM, BL, DPP HC, described climate transparency as a strategic national asset for evidence-based decision-making, climate finance, carbon markets, and the implementation of Nigeria's NDC 3.0 and Net-Zero ambition.

Dr. Henning Wuester, Director of ICAT, commended Nigeria's progress in strengthening its climate transparency framework, reaffirming that robust MRV systems are essential for effective climate action, investor confidence, and opportunities under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.

The workshop validated key ICAT Phase II outputs, including the NDC Sectoral GHG Inventory Guidelines, IPPU Sector Review Report, National Inventory Data Flow Systems and Architecture, GHG Emissions Projections Report, Renewable Feed-in Tariff GHG Impact Assessment, Sectoral Institutional Arrangements Report, and the National GHG Inventory Management System Guidebook—critical tools for institutionalizing Nigeria's climate transparency system.

These achievements support the climate and sustainable development priorities of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda, positioning Nigeria for green growth, enhanced climate governance, and increased investment.

It takes a team to build a dream

As SB64 draws to a close in Bonn, the Head of the Nigerian Delegation and Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), Dr. Mrs. Tenioye Majekodunmi, LLM, BL, DPP HC, acknowledges the dedication, expertise, and collaborative spirit demonstrated by members of the Nigerian Delegation throughout two weeks of intensive climate negotiations.

Through participation in negotiation sessions, contact groups, bilateral engagements, side events, technical consultations, and daily coordination meetings, delegates advanced Nigeria’s priorities across adaptation, climate finance, transparency, just transition, carbon markets, technology, and response measures.

Each contribution, partnership, and outcome reflects a collective commitment to ensuring that Nigeria’s interests—and Africa’s broader climate priorities—are effectively represented in global climate discussions.

While SB64 concludes in Bonn, the work continues. The engagements, partnerships, and progress achieved during these sessions will help inform preparations for COP31 in Antalya, Türkiye, where Nigeria will continue to advocate for ambitious, equitable, and practical climate action.

Together, we remain committed to building a more sustainable and resilient future.

On the margins of the UNFCCC SB64 Sessions in Bonn, Germany, the Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), Dr. (Mrs.) Tenioye Majekodunmi, LLM, BL, DPP HC held a bilateral meeting with the Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC, Mr. Simon Stiell.

The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss Nigeria’s climate priorities, progress in implementing its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) 3.0, and the critical importance of translating climate commitments into tangible development outcomes.

Discussions focused on strengthening international cooperation, accelerating access to climate finance, supporting adaptation efforts, and advancing the implementation of climate actions that deliver economic growth, resilience, and sustainable development.

The Director-General reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to effective implementation of its NDC 3.0 and to working with international partners to unlock the investments, partnerships, and institutional support required to achieve its climate and development objectives.

Nigeria remains committed to constructive engagement within the multilateral climate process and to advancing practical, country-driven solutions that support both national priorities and global climate ambition.

At SB64 in Bonn, countries are working through the technical details that shape global climate action.
Key discussions include:
• How countries track and report emissions transparently
• How climate finance is delivered to developing countries
• How adaptation support can be scaled for vulnerable nations
• How the Global Stocktake (progress review of the Paris Agreement) is implemented
• How loss and damage support mechanisms are structured
These may sound technical — but they determine how fast countries can access climate funding, implement energy transition plans, and protect communities from climate impacts.

🌍 Youth Leadership in Climate Action: Amplifying Youth Voices in the Implementation of Nigeria's NDC 3.0 #NYCS2026

The National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), in partnership with UNICEF and ActionAid and with support from GIZ, convened the 1st Nigeria Youth Climate Summit in Abuja, bringing together young leaders, policymakers, development partners, and climate stakeholders to advance youth engagement in Nigeria's NDC 3.0.

Opening the Summit, the Director-General of NCCC, Dr. Mrs. Tenioye Majekodunmi, LLM, BL, DPP HC, challenged young Nigerians to take ownership of the future and become innovators, entrepreneurs, advocates, and solution providers driving Nigeria's green transition.

She emphasized that climate action is not only about protecting the environment, but also about creating jobs, unlocking innovation, strengthening energy security, and building a more resilient future. The DG urged young people to lead in their schools, communities, businesses, and advocacy efforts, stressing that youth leadership will be critical to delivering Nigeria's NDC 3.0.

The Summit also witnessed the launch of the Junior Climate Heroes Awards, recognizing young Nigerians making outstanding contributions to climate action.

Goodwill messages were delivered by Rownak Khan of UNICEF Nigeria, Hon. Kama Nkemkanma, Chairman of the House Committee on Climate Change and Ecology, Mr. Somkele Awa-Kalu of SEforALL, The Honourable Minister of Youth Development, rep. by Akinfiresoye Leah Tolulope and Suwaiba Muhammad Dankabo of ActionAid.

The message was clear: young Nigerians are not just participants in climate action—they are leaders shaping a resilient and sustainable future.
