Because white hair is so light, you can see the pink of your scalp more easily — and somehow it can make your hair look thinner than it really is.

I’ve spent my entire adult life in an industry that places an enormous amount of value on youth and appearance. Even though I’ve always believed in embracing who we are, I’ve still absorbed some of those messages along the way.

So turning 60 has been an interesting reckoning.

Not because I’m ashamed of getting older. I’m not.

But because I’m realizing just how deeply we’ve been taught to fear something that is, quite simply, happening to all of us.

I’m still figuring out what it means to let go of some of those old ideas—and to see aging not as something to hide, but as another part of being fully visible.

Maybe that’s the real work of getting older. Not trying to look younger, but becoming less afraid of looking exactly like ourselves.

This isn’t really about how I looked in the amazing red dress by @alexandermcqueen. I can see that it looked great! It’s about how different my internal experience was from what was actually happening externally.

Inside, I was questioning whether I should even be seen.

Outside, two cool ass women had an extraordinary vision.

Anastasia @stacialupu, a model I’ve worked with, chose this dress for me — and chose me to OPEN the show in it. And Janet Mandell @janetmandell , the curator extraordinaire, trusted me to wear it and encouraged me when I was doubting the choice.

I’m so grateful to both of them.

It was a powerful confrontation with my own beliefs about my aging body, and a beautiful reminder that sometimes other people can see our value before we can see it ourselves.

Thank you, Anastasia and Janet, for having the vision I hadn’t quite caught up to until I stepped onto the runway ❤️‍🔥
