FROM A YOUNG BUCK WITH A DREAM TO BUILDING A HIP-HOP MOVEMENT!

My very first Hip-Hop magazine! Back when I was just a young buck, still a student, with big dreams and not much money in my pocket. Trying to find my place in the world.

I remember going to Kinko’s, putting this magazine together myself, making copies, cutting and pasting, trying to give our local Hip-Hop scene some recognition.

Growing up, one thing that always bothered me was seeing so much raw talent in my city and surrounding neighborhoods, but hardly anybody was giving these young artists a platform.

We had B-Boys, DJs, MCs, and graffiti writers with incredible talent. The culture was alive in our streets, schools, parks, and backyards. But where were the venues? Where were the promoters? Where were the events bringing all FOUR ELEMENTS of Hip-Hop together?

I got tired of waiting for somebody to give us an opportunity.

So I decided to create our own.

I started putting together my own magazine, promoting my friends, organizing events, and finding ways to put our talent on display. I wasn’t some big-time promoter. I was just another kid from the neighborhood who believed in his people and the culture we represented.

We didn’t have money, connections, or anybody opening doors for us. We had passion, creativity, and each other.

If they weren’t going to put us on, we were going to put OURSELVES ON!

Little did I know those early days would plant the seeds for what would eventually become B-Boy City.

Looking back at this magazine reminds me that this was never just about throwing parties or battles. It was about creating opportunities, building community, giving the overlooked a voice, and showing the next generation that you don’t have to wait for somebody to believe in you.

Sometimes you gotta build your own stage.

FROM THE NEIGHBORHOOD, FOR THE NEIGHBORHOOD.

Peace, Love, Unity & Having Fun.

This is where the journey started. This is our history. And the legacy continues.

Going through old files on hard drives and found when years ago I was even selling Tee Double stamps. I said if James Brown can do it, why couldn't I. So I did. Profits were donated to various musician non profits around town. www.teedouble.com by @terranyjohnson

If you've ever played a @sxsw Hip Hop showcase, then you should thanks Keir Worthy the FIRST Hip Hop director who sold @sxsw on the idea of including the genre when they still saw it as a fad,and the other big bro Andre Walker who took it to another level and built it into a platform where labels, magazines and TV shows started taking notice. These are Austin legends in its purest firm. But no statues, murals or ssquares named after them. Andre is the one who brought me in to handle all things Hip Hop at @sxsw after him. The origins are why people started to fly around the world to rap here. Why corporations started incorporating the artform into private events etc. You're welcome. by @terranyjohnson
