19 DAYS UNTIL ELECTION DAY!

The sprint has officially begun! #TeamTerry4DPSCD is out in these Detroit streets, walking neighborhoods, talking with voters, and enjoying every opportunity to connect with the people of our city.

One thing I've gotten better at throughout this journey is fundraising. 😂

During my years as a program officer at The Skillman Foundation, I often shared a little wisdom: Ask for advice, and you might receive money. Ask for money, and you'll probably receive advice!

Funny how that works.

Well, this campaign has taught me to become more comfortable asking for resources and support.

As we enter these final 19 days, we're continuing to invest in the tools that make our campaign possible: yard signs, T-shirts, community events, mailers, and materials for connecting with voters.

$1, $2.18, $5.19, $25, $50. Every contribution, regardless of size, helps cover these expenses.

If you'd like to contribute to our campaign, you can do so here:

https://secure.actblue.com/donate/terry-whitfield-1

I'm grateful for everyone who has shared their time, resources, encouragement, and advice throughout this journey.

19 days to go. Let's make every day count!

159 doors. 159 mailers. 6154 steps. Green Acres community. 1 awesome interaction that reinforced my belief that an equitable education is a fundamental right for ALL students.

It's a belief I've spent nearly 20 years cultivating with the help of my community in SW Detroit, my tres comadres, and countless other mentors.

I promise to bring a lazer focus on equitable education to EVERY student across all 105 schools. Because if we aren't striving to be the best district in the country, for every DPSCD student, then what are we doing?

The one thing I will do is work... and talk.

Over a 4 day period, I was able to hand deliver nearly 500 mailers in the Lafayette Park and Sherwood Forest neighborhoods.

My personal commitment for the next 2 weeks: 2000 hand delivered mailers. 2000 potential voters to connect with 22 days before election day.

Senior living apartments, focus groups with parents and students, individual contacts with voters while I'm out and about.

I'm loving this life. We release the outcomes and embrace the process.

Let's go!!

Yesterday was a whirlwind of experiences. Highest of highs to moments that tested me and will forge me into a stronger leader for ALL of our students and families.

The 2 questions the day left me with were: 1) if the issue were talking about isn't rooted in what's best for the students, then what are we talking about? and 2) if the conversation isn't about making DPSCD the best school district in the country, then what are we talking about?

1+1= what's best for our students.

Wednesday stats... 12892 steps, 189 doors got 189 flyers, many awesome questions received from DPSCD's finest students (Thanks to Sharnese Harris & The Konnection) and 1 awesome lesson learned.

Let's go!!

This morning was awesome. And TODAY IS COUNT DAY!!

Team Terry joined Council President James Tate and the Task Force on Black Male Engagement at Ralph W. Emerson PK-8 to clap in the students on their way in to school.

Count Day is critical to the funding DPSCD receives for our students, and it left me amazed at what it looks like when the city, schools, and community members come together around an issue critical to the education of our students.

How are they supposed to learn if they aren't in school? Make that make sense, especially to the 60% (30000) of students who missed 18 days of school last year.

Great morning that left me with one question: What would it take for every student at every school to feel this level community love everyday when they get to school?

Let's go!!!

100 mailers on 100 doors... 45 minutes... 5400 steps...

The only opps today was my right hip when I stepped into the house to kiss my wife on the forehead.

And we keep moving...

A wild week began and ended in Southwest Detroit, with organizations that helped cultivate me as an organizer and youth development professional.

I’ve always believed those closest to the challenges are often closest to the solutions, if our systems are willing to listen and act.

That’s what I aim to bring to the DPSCD Board of Education: to be a conduit for the hopes, dreams, concerns, and wisdom of our community, and turn that voice into action within our education system.

The goal is simple: that DPSCD is an equitable system that cultivates students, families, and educators, and becomes the best school district in the country for ALL students.

Because if that’s not the goal, what the hell are we doing this for?

#NationalSonsDay 🌞 And y’all KNOW we’re celebrating our Mista Beau James! Our smart, funny, sports lovin', full-of-personality 4 yr old who keeps us laughing, keeps us on our toes, and fills our home with SO much love. Our one and only SonShine. Our greatest joy 🥹

And this post hits a little differently because September is also #ChildhoodCancerAwarenessMonth 🎗️

Our RainBEAU is a childhood cancer survivor 🌈 His little life is already a testimony of strength, hope, faith, and MIRACLES. And while we celebrate how far our boy has come, our hearts are always with every child and every family still in the fight.

Today we celebrate YOU, Beau James! Keep shining that big, beautiful light of yours, baby boy. Mama & Dada love you more than you’ll ever know 🥰

Thanks to my Brother, Phillip, and the gratiousness of Bishop Ellis III, I had the opportunity to introduce myself to the Greater Grace Temple family this morning.

I was blessed to receive Bishop Ellis' endorsement, and while he blessed me with his support, today's message provided me with yet another reason why I'm running to earn your vote for DSPCD Board of Education.

It is not through might, or power, that DPSCD will become the best district in this country. It's success must be grounded in a spirit of faith, possibility, empathy, partnership, and excellence. (Zacariah 4:6)

Curriculum is important. Parent and family engagement and involvement are critical. Educator recruitment and retention are the foundation of a successful educational experience.

AND, all of that is just well dressed activity if it isn't grounded in a spirit of faith that believes our students are worth the best our community of parents, families, educators, administrators, and community partners have to offer.

Through this next School Board, we have an opportunity to set a standard that drives DPSCD to be the best school district in the country. Because if that's not the goal, then what are we working towards? Our students demand our best to be their very best.

What. A. NIGHT! Terry and I had the absolute BEST time at the inaugural @TheConeyDetroit at the @DetroitOpera House

Yes, it was star-studded. Yes, we laughed until our faces hurt! And yes, only in #Detroit can you put comedy, music, Motown karaoke AND a coney dog-eating contest under one roof! 🤣🌭

Yes, it was so amazing to meet @MarcEvanJackson in person 🥰

But what made the night truly special was the WHY behind it all.

After-school programs and access to the arts mean so much to @terrywhitfield313 Terry and me. We believe every child deserves opportunities to discover what makes them light up—to create, perform, learn, dream BIG and simply have a safe place to belong.

And DETROIT showed UP! 🙌🏾 By the end of the evening, $2.72 MILLION had been raised to support arts education and creative opportunities for Detroit youth. THAT deserves the biggest applause of the night! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

A beautiful night of laughter, creativity, generosity and so much Detroit LOVE.

Now THIS is how you throw a party with a purpose! 🥹❤️🎭
