There’s something really special about growing up surrounded by wide open land. As a kid, I didn’t think much of it— cows outside the front yard, miles of pasture in every direction, riding the four wheeler down to the dirt road to catch the school bus. When it rained, “mudding” wasn’t a hobby, it was just how you got home.We didn’t have great internet, so a lot of my childhood was doing something out on the land or reading books. I read constantly, wrote stories, and built entire worlds in my imagination. Looking back now, I can see how much those two things shaped me: the vastness and quiet of the land, and a love for the whimsical and imagined.I think both live inside my work now. My paintings are rooted in real landscapes and changing skies, but they also carry something softer and more emotional- memory, longing, wonder, hope. I think that’s why my work feels both real and a little dreamlike.I’m self-taught beyond the art classes I took through grade school and high school, and I’ve been painting seriously for years now. It still feels a little surreal that these pieces made in my studio somehow end up living in homes all over the country.So for those of you who are newer here lately- hi, I’m Tessa.
