Happy birthday to the baby who saved my life when I was 16 and who has stayed with me ever since, providing me with granddaughters, a daughter in law, who really makes me laugh, who is a great dad and husband, who has real integrity, and who is literally one of my best friends. What an epic celebration of @sonnyrollinsbridgeproject. It was so great to hear all the beautiful stories about what a deep and humble person he was. The event was almost as much fun as when Sonny (pictured with me at the White House) received the Medal of the Arts in 2011, when I got to witness @billydrummonddrums play for our president @barackobama (who we shook hands with!) at the Kennedy Center. That was four days of unadulterated amazingness. Meanwhile, yesterday was a close second, with so many great musicians on the stage and/or in the audience. Too many to name (without forgetting some). Let us all join the petition to rename the Williamsburg Bridge after him. #sonnyrollins by @tessasouter

On September 17, 2001, I was on my way back to New York on Virgin Flight 21 when the captain announced: “Ladies and gentlemen, may I please have your undivided attention.” Yup! You most certainly can! Apparently, someone had called in that there may be a bomb on board and we were being escorted by two fighter jets (in case we needed to be shot out of the sky for some reason) to some army barracks in maybe Labrador. We were all to get off the plane and not leave anything behind while it was thoroughly searched overnight. Eminem’s band was on the plane, which I discovered when all the airline classes were bundled together and fed in a canteen and allowed to make phone calls. The weirdest thing, though, was that earlier I’d noticed a woman at the airport from a distance. No idea why, but I had a strong feeling about her. I didn’t even know she was on the same flight until I found I was sharing a room with her that night! It was freezing cold and we only had a thin blanket and she told me in the morning that she’d failed to pluck up the courage to get into my skinny bunk with me for warmth! I absolutely would have said yes. Was my recognizing her some kind of precognition? I don’t know. When we all left to go back to the plane waiting for us in the middle of the deserted huge runway, we were driven in a coach, followed by all these little kids on bikes who had somehow got wind that Eminem’s band were there. It was so innocent and sweet. Music recorded in 2002 with #FreddieBryant and #EssietOkonEssiet for my debut album, Listen Love, which came out in 2004. #neverforget taken in New York, New York by @tessasouter

You can almost feel the ghosts when you stand here. “Se wo were firi na wosan kofa a, yenkyiri,” which means “It is not wrong to go back and get that which you have forgotten.” #africanburialground #sankofa #pictureinblackandwhite taken in New York City by @tessasouter

Lately I have been feeling very mortal. I will say my Bupropien is turning out to be very helpful because, eight weeks in, instead of staring catatonically at stuff to do (like pack my suitcase for my Rochester Jazz Festival gig a few weeks ago) and generally fretting, I find I am appreciating precious and possibly fleeting things like beautiful skies and fluffy clouds, sunny days, rain (I grew up in England!), and how hot my husband’s arm is when I slip my arm through his. And this weekend I will be in the front row to see him @mezzrowjazzclub because I don’t want to miss a second of his amazingness. Thanks @chrisdrukker for this pic . @billydrummonddrums #lifeisshort #makeeverysecondcount taken in New York, New York by @tessasouter
