✨ Penny shift pattern hack ✨

Alter the Penny to a tapered maxi
The free pattern is available on my shop, link in bio

Here I’m demonstrating the alteration I made for a size 8. You can apply these measurements to your own size, or experiment with your own

Keep the original facings from the pattern and use the Burrito sewing method for the neckline and armholes

the burrito method - on any neckline shape

such an easy way to bag out and neatly finish your necklines and armholes when you have an all-in-one facing or lining

this works on any top or dress with a wider shoulder, and once you get the hang of it, it’s SO satisfying

I’ve shown the method on one armhole here, then you simply repeat the exact same steps for the remaining armhole

save this one for the next time you’re sewing an all-in-one facing or lining 🤍

So… this one just wasn’t quite right

I had to make a maxi version of the Penny, but once I put it on… it wasn’t what I had envisioned

I tried tapering in the side seams, which then made the hem too narrow, so had to unpick and rethink it

In the end I added waist ties to give it a bit more shape, but I’m still not totally sold on it

So… back to the drawing board and I’m making another one 😬

it’s been a minute since I made another one of my free sunhat patterns, so I finally did!

this time I wanted to try a softer, shorter brim and see how it would look in stripes. I really love how it turned out

I took my free Penny Shift pattern and gave it a whole new personality 💛

With just a few simple pattern changes, I turned the original V-neck shift into a flared dress with a round neckline. No new pattern needed

I’ve put together a short, easy-to-follow tutorial showing you exactly how to make the changes, including how to finish the neckline and armholes with French binding, PLUS how to turn the original facings into full lining pieces if you want to make a fully lined version
