Happy World Breastfeeding Week! Currently typing this with my baby on my breast-almost 7 months of breastfeeding behind us. I am thankful for the opportunity to go on this journey with my baby.

In Our Bubble by Tessla Thompson

This work is my first self-portrait since having my son in January. Like most moms, I often feel anxious about taking care of my home and family, finances, health, the environment, and the world that my child will inherit. At times, these worries intrude on the happy bubble that I try to maintain with my baby, particularly when we are breastfeeding. The bars on my arm represent my struggle to try to be the ideal American mother, while the world around us tries to pull us out of our happy bubble. The crown of stars represents feeling dazed and confused, like in an old-school cartoon. In this piece, I wanted to show that both could be worn with beauty and grace amid struggle.
